Tips and Tricks

Attack First, Always!

The key to victory in Advance Wars is to always initiate the attack. If you're two units of the same type go head-to-head, the one that attacks first will always come out on top. This advantage widens if you have more health or the terrain advantage. Even if you are technically outmatched by a weaker unit, attacking first is a sliding scale, so a Mech unit attacking a Tank first will fare much better than if the Tank attacked the Mech unit first.

Master the Terrain

Terrain plays a crucial role in determining the outcome of a battle in Advance Wars. When you hover over a unit to contemplate attacking it, make sure to take the terrain into account. A unit inside a city or on the mountains will have a lower damage number than a unit sitting out in the open. So make sure to use the terrain to your advantage and take cover!

Remember the Cost of Units

In Advance Wars, each unit has a cost, and sometimes it's worth putting a unit in harm's way to eliminate a more expensive unit. It's okay to use cheaper units as buffers to protect your more expensive units. And don't be afraid to plant a unit in a one-tile choke to slow the enemy down for a turn. Use your units strategically and don't waste them.

Bait the Enemy

The AI in Advance Wars Reboot Camp is smarter than ever, but some of the old "baiting" tricks still work. Use your APCs and Transport Copters as a way to draw out the enemy and expose them to easier counter-attacks. While you never want to lose units, you can get AI units to expose themselves to easier counter-attacks at times by drawing them out with these support units.

Control the Factories

In Advance Wars, if you plant a unit on a Factory, the enemy cannot produce a unit there anymore. So even if you can't get a Mech/Infantry unit to a Factory to capture it, if you have an air unit in the vicinity, you might be able to plant it on the Factory and then just keep it there if the enemy has no way to attack your aerial unit.

CO Powers Are Your Friends

CO powers are not balanced, and that's the point! Not all CO powers are as good as others, so understand what each one does. Some of the simplest ones remain the best, so Max's boost to his direct combat units remains really strong because it's straightforward and will allow you to chew through units during your turn where it's triggered. So experiment with different CO powers and find the one that works best for you.

Know Your Units

Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of your units is crucial in Advance Wars. Some cheap units are actually way more powerful than you'd think. A couple of Mech units can cause a lot of problems for Tanks and other much more expensive units. And remember, an Anti-Air unit is great against air units, but those units will also wreck Infantry. So make sure you know which units to use in which situation.

Zoom Out and Reset Turn

Using the right stick to zoom out the map is helpful, especially once air units are introduced. Fighters and Bombers have very large ranges, so zooming out the map so you can see their attack range will help you plan your moves so you don't accidentally wander into their range on your turn. And if you're not quite happy with how you mapped out your moves or you misclicked, don't be afraid to use the Reset Turn button. The game saves after every turn, so you can always reset the turn.
