Baldurs Gate 3 Development
The original creation of Baldur's Gate was a collaborative effort between BioWare and Black Isle Studios, published by Interplay Entertainment in 1998. The game was underpinned by the licensed Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) rule set, specifically within the Forgotten Realms realm.
This triumph birthed the sequel, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, and its accompanying expansion, alongside Icewind Dale and its successor, as well as Planescape: Torment. A further continuation, Baldur's Gate III: The Black Hound, initiated by Black Isle Studios in 2003, was halted due to Interplay's financial crisis, causing the studio's closure.
The licensing for D&D video games shifted to Atari in 2008, leading to the release of Neverwinter Nights and its sequel, Neverwinter Nights 2. Wizards of the Coast, now owners of the D&D franchise, commenced updates to core rule sets. In contrast, Larian Studios' new Baldur's Gate sequel bears no ties to the abandoned Baldur's Gate III: The Black Hound.
The series' rights stirred interest among various developers, including Brian Fargo of inXile Entertainment and Feargus Urquhart of Obsidian Entertainment, seeking the IP for over a decade. Larian Studios approached Wizards of the Coast after the release of Divinity: Original Sin in 2014, although initial considerations were withheld due to Larian's newcomer status. Divinity: Original Sin II's pre-release materials impressed Wizards of the Coast, sparking renewed interest in Baldur's Gate 3's development.
Based on the 5th-edition Dungeons & Dragons rule set, Baldur's Gate 3 includes adaptations to enhance its suitability as a video game. Notable adjustments, such as a more player-friendly combat system, were made to ensure an enjoyable experience.
Baldur's Gate 3's anticipation was fueled by Larian Studios' teaser before E3 2019, officially revealed during Google's Stadia presentation. The tabletop adventure Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus serves as a precursor, with Baldur's Gate 3's storyline following the events of this module. Larian Studios announced the game's macOS release on 5 October 2020, alongside Windows and Stadia.
Initially scheduled for early access on 30 September 2020, Baldur's Gate III's launch was postponed to 6 October 2020. Early access encompassed the first game act, about 25 hours of content, and a portion of the world map. Additional elements, including multiplayer features and classes, were incrementally introduced through patches during early access, culminating in the full release in August 2023. Following Stadia's closure, the Stadia version was scrapped.
The full release was set for macOS, Windows, and PlayStation 5 on 31 August 2023, with adjustments for the PC release to 3 August, and macOS and PlayStation 5 to 6 September. Larian Studios acknowledged development challenges for an Xbox Series X/S port, potentially causing a delay to 2024 due to the Series S's limitations and Series X's parity mandate.
