What is Ekadashi?
Ekadashi is an auspicious day in the Vedic calendar, occurring twice a month on the eleventh day of both the waxing (Shukla Pakṣa) and waning (Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa) lunar cycles. It is widely observed by followers of Vaishnavism, a prominent sect of Hinduism, who offer their worship to the deity Vishnu by abstaining from food. In India and Nepal, the Ekadashi fast is believed to facilitate the cleansing, repair, and rejuvenation of the body. To this end, devotees typically refrain from consuming protein-rich and carbohydrate-heavy foods like beans and grains. Instead, they limit themselves to fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The fasting period begins at sunrise on the day of Ekadashi and ends at sunrise on the following day, during which rice is avoided.

Ekadashi Significance
Fasting during Ekadashi serves the dual purpose of reducing body fat, which can lead to lethargy, and increasing time for spiritual activity. By doing so, one can attain both external and internal purity. However, the true aim of fasting is to strengthen one’s faith and love for Krishna. By minimizing bodily demands and devoting time to chanting the Hare Krishna mantra or engaging in similar service, we can please the Supreme Personality of Godhead and make progress in our Krishna consciousness. According to the Brahma-vaivarta Purana, observing Ekadashi vrata can absolve one of all sinful reactions and lead to advancement in a pious life. Similarly, the Padma Purana states that even those who follow Ekadashi by trickery can have their sins forgiven and easily attain the supreme goal, the abode of Vaikuntha.
