The Elephant Whisperers is beautifully set in the forests of the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, a national park in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. This documentary revolves around the emotional bond between its two human protagonists, Bomman and Bellie, and their two elephant calves. The two elephant calves named Raghu and Ammu are under the foster care of Bommi and Bellie. The tribal couple, who were not married in the first half of the film, comes from the Kattunayakkar community, and we see them taking care of the orphaned elephant calf Raghu, abandoned by his village herd after his mother was electrocuted. Later, the couple adopted the three-month-old orphan elephant, Ammu. Bomman apply make-up to their beloved elephant calves by decorating their foreheads with colored designs to differentiate them from the other 150 or so elephants that live in the forests, with a tiger peeking from behind the bushes time and again. Gonsalves, the director of this documentary, said that this was one of her favorite moments from the film.

The documentary shows the tribal couple from the Kattunayakar community taking care of the orphaned elephant Raghu, abandoned by his village herd after his mother was electrocuted. Later, they adopted the orphan elephant, Ammu. The movie shows how humans devotedly coexist with nature. Raghu is then transferred by the forest department to another caretaker who is experienced with adolescent elephants. This makes Bomman and Bellie to become sad and terribly miss Raghu. Ammu understands their emotion and wipes away Bellie’s tears in one scene.
