In the novel The Fault in Our Stars the main characters Hazel and Augustus go on a trip to Amsterdam to meet their favorite author, Van Houten. However, their meeting with Van Houten turns out to be a disappointment as he is a mean-spirited drunk who cannot answer any of Hazel’s questions. Accompanied by Lidewij, who feels horrified by Van Houten's behavior, Hazel and Augustus tour Anne Frank’s house and share a romantic kiss at the end of the tour.
They return to the hotel where they make love for the first and only time. The following day, Augustus reveals to Hazel that his cancer has returned and spread everywhere.
