Passengers Ending Explained

Two years after an asteroid collision, Jim and Aurora discover hull breaches on their ship. The computer module is responsible for the ship's fusion reactor power plant is severely damaged, leading to cascading malfunctions. They replace the module, but the computer's attempt to vent the reactor fails. Jim must spacewalk and vent the plasma from outside using manual controls. To keep the vent open, Jim must remain in the tube while Aurora initiates venting from inside the ship. In a heartfelt confession, Aurora admits her fear of losing Jim and being left alone.

Jim survives the venting but is blasted out into space as his tether snaps, and his spacesuit begins to lose oxygen. Aurora retrieves Jim's body and resuscitates him in the Autodoc. The reactor is repaired, and the Avalon returns to normal operations. After burying Gus in space, Jim discovers the Autodoc can function as a hibernation pod for one person. Aurora could go back into hibernation for the remainder of the voyage, but she chooses to remain awake with Jim.

Eighty-eight years later, the crew awakens on schedule, and they discover a lush and vibrant Homestead II. In the grand concourse of the ship, they find a large tree with trailing vines, a small cabin, and flying birds. A recording of Aurora's story describes the life she and Jim shared on the Avalon. Jim had presented Aurora with a makeshift engagement ring, which she had accepted.

Passengers Movie

Passengers is a 2016 American science fiction film directed by Morten Tyldum and starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. The movie tells the story of two passengers, Jim and Aurora, who are awakened from hibernation 90 years too early on a spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet.

As they explore the luxurious spaceship, Avalon, they realize that something has gone terribly wrong. Jim and Aurora soon discover that their hibernation pods had malfunctioned, and they are now the only two awake on the ship, with no way to go back into hibernation. With no one else to talk to, they begin to bond and fall in love.

However, their happiness is short-lived as they soon learn that the ship is facing a critical malfunction that could lead to the death of all the other passengers in hibernation. Jim and Aurora must work together to save the ship and its passengers, even if it means sacrificing their own lives in the process.

The movie received mixed reviews from critics, with praise given to the performances of Lawrence and Pratt. The special effects and production design were also widely praised, with the spaceship Avalon being a particular standout. However, some criticized the film's plot, calling it predictable and lacking in depth.

Passengers Plot

The Avalon is a sleeper ship, carrying 5,000 colonists and 258 crew members in hibernation pods on a 120-year journey from Earth to Homestead II. However, after only 30 years, an asteroid collision damages the ship, causing a malfunction that awakens passenger Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer, 90 years too early. Isolated and alone, Jim grows despondent until he notices Aurora Lane, a young woman in a pod. Despite knowing it is wrong, he awakens her for companionship, and they fall in love over the next year.

But when Aurora discovers the truth about her awakening, she is devastated and rejects Jim. Gus Mancuso, another awakened crew member, helps Jim and Aurora discover the cause of the ship's malfunctions and gives them his employee code to access crew-only areas. They repair the ship and vent the reactor, but Jim is forced to spacewalk and nearly dies. Aurora resuscitates him and chooses to remain awake with him instead of going back into hibernation. 88 years later, the ship's crew awakens to discover a lush planet and a cabin left by Jim and Aurora, who lived a full life together on the Avalon.
