What happened to Radar on Mash?
One of the most beloved characters in television history is Walter "Radar" O'Reilly. Fans of M*A*S*H were able to follow Radar, portrayed by Gary Burghoff, as he progressed from a naive 18-year-old who had just been drafted with his teddy bear by his side to a man who was the glue that held the 4077th together throughout the show's run. He was everyone's friend, confidant, and mentor, even though he would eventually learn a great deal himself. After the seventh season of M*A*S*H in 1979, Burghoff left due to burnout and a desire to spend more time with his family. However, he returned the following season to film "Goodbye Radar," a special two-part farewell episode. "Family, to me, became the most important thing," he explained.

Why did Radar go home on Mash?
Radar almost didn't leave the 4077th on the show. The corporal learns that his uncle has passed away in the two-part episode "Goodbye Radar," which served as Episodes 4 and 5 of Season 8. Colonel Potter (Harry Morgan) made arrangements for him to receive a hardship discharge because he was aware that doing so would put his mother in a difficult situation because she would have to care for the family farm on her own.
However, Radar didn't think he could leave them behind because the unit was struggling without a generator at the time. Even though Alan Alda's Hawkeye and Potter tried to persuade him that everything would be alright, it wasn't until he saw Jamie Farr's Klinger get them a new generator that he realized they could survive without him. He decided to return to Iowa, where his teddy bear had been left with Hawkeye. Gary's decision to leave M*A*S*H was not an easy one. However, he decided to prioritize family over work.
Director Charles S. Dubin claims that Gary's decision to leave was based on numerous factors. "Because he felt, not neglected, but he felt he wasn't getting his proper dues," Charles told the Television Academy Foundation in a series of interviews on M*A*S*H. "Gary Burghoff always made me feel sorry for him." Charles insisted that there was more to it, despite the interviewer's observation that Gary might have been upset because he was leaving after that episode. He was discussing a possible future with her in the script, possibly in relation to his own domestic issues. He stated, "I think that was a large part of it."

Did Radar die on Mash?
When Radar left the show, a two-part special was broadcast, but he did not die in it. People often forget what happened to popular TV characters when they think back because they become attached to them. Even when they saw Radar's return, the majority of viewers would have assumed that he was just one more casualty because they believed that war was the show's main theme, which led to a lot of deaths.
