Australian Idol Audition Process
Audition
To discover the competitors for each season, auditions were held in significant Australian cities. Any competitor who received a "yes" from the majority of the judges advanced to the top 100 in Sydney. The auditions that made for the most compelling television episodes—generally, the worst and best—were included.
Top 100
To compete in the Top 100, almost 100 people traveled to Sydney. These competitors were reduced over a few days to the semi-finalists.
Semi-finals
There were between 8 and 10 contenders and between 24 and 40 semi-finalists over many seasons. Two evenings were dedicated to each semifinal. Every semi-finalist performed a song the first night, and each judge gave feedback on their performance. Then the people cast their vote the following day (by phone or SMS). Results night was the next night, and the top two or three advanced to the top 12. In order to give certain competitors a second chance to place among the top 12, a "wild card" semifinal round was also introduced.
Finals (Top 12)
Each week in the finals, one competitor was eliminated. Except for Season 1, which eliminated two contestants in the first three weeks of the finals, and Season 3, which removed two contestants in the first week of the finals because there were only 13 contestants left.
The Big Finish
The Sydney Opera House hosted the Grand Finale, the night of final results. Fireworks and an outdoor performance with numerous former American Idol contestants and other Australian musicians were typically included. The top 12 were honored, and the winner was revealed at the conclusion of the evening. Seasons 1 through 5 took place on the music hall stage of the Sydney Opera House. The season finale for seasons 6 and 7 took place on a stage built on the Opera.
