Deep Water Ending Explained

The ending of Deep Water, which is available on Hulu, shows Vic having murdered Tony, Melinda's latest lover, and going to great lengths to hide his body. Meanwhile, Melinda discovers Tony's license in a box of Vic's snails and contacts Don Wilson, a new neighbor who had been suspicious of Vic, to follow him. When Don arrives at the scene and sees Vic tampering with Tony's body, he tries to drive away in his car to expose the truth. However, Vic chases him down on his mountain bike, causing Don to swerve off the side of a cliff to his death. Upon returning home, Vic finds Melinda sitting on the stairs and they both pretend that nothing happened, with Melinda burning Tony's licenses to cover up his murder and maintain their suburban couple appearance. This ending is different from that of the Deep Water book.

Deep Water Ending Scene

The film's ending deviates significantly from the original novel, where Vic and Melinda had an agreement that allowed her to have multiple lovers as long as she remained with Vic. In the novel, Melinda feigned renewed interest in Vic to catch him off guard and even arranged for Vic and Don to arrive at the site of Tony's death to incriminate him. However, the story takes a darker turn when Vic races home and strangles Melinda to death, leading to his arrest.

The novel's ending not only fits better with the thriller aspect of the story, but it also makes more sense given the tension between the Van Allens throughout the film. Vic is clearly uncomfortable with Melinda's infidelity, and she taunts him about it without showing any sympathy for his feelings. The film suggests that their relationship is at a breaking point, and the novel's original ending would have provided a fitting conclusion.

Instead, the film ends with a perplexing car chase and the couple choosing to stay together despite Vic being a murderer and Melinda a serial adulterer. The end credits feature Trixie singing along to "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing," a bizarre choice that hints at her potential psychological issues inherited from her parents. Furthermore, Trixie correctly pins Charlie's murder on her father, who brushes it off as "their little secret," raising questions about his parenting skills.
