In Fae Farm, tools not only become more efficient but also gain unique abilities starting at the Iron level. These abilities can range from throwing axes to executing area-of-effect moves with your pickaxe and shovel. However, these upgrades might be easy to miss since they are provided by an easily overlooked NPC.
Unlocking Tool Upgrades
To initiate the tool-upgrading process, you must complete Chapter 2. During Chapter 3, you'll receive access to the Saltwater Mine, where you can gather essential materials like copper ore, stone, and coal needed for tool upgrades. Curiously, the game doesn't explicitly point out where to upgrade tools, but you can access the upgrading menu by speaking to 'Cinder,' the NPC, at her usual location in the docks.
Smelting Copper Ingots
Before you can upgrade tools, you'll need to craft a Stone Forge on your farm. This requires 25 Stone and 10 Coal, both of which are readily available in the Saltwater Mine, especially as you delve deeper. Once the forge is ready, smelt Copper Ingots by using 10 Copper Ore and 2 Coal. Each starting tool requires 1 Copper Ingot and 100 Florins for upgrading when talking to Cinder.
Unlocking New Abilities and Efficiency
Upon reaching the Copper level, you'll notice that certain resources can now be broken with your tools, which were too weak to do so initially. Subsequent upgrades (Iron, Feyrite, Silver, Orichalum, and Gold) will continue this process, enhancing your overall efficiency.
Upgrading Non-Metal Tools
Apart from metal tools, you'll also accumulate other types of tools that boost hobby XP or help deal with threats. Upgrade these tools as follows:
- Fishing Rod: Acquire new rods from Eddy the fisherman at fishing levels 3, 5, and 7.
- Critter Net: Purchase upgraded nets from Mel the beekeeper at critter-catching levels 3, 5, and 7.
- Magic Staff: The staff upgrades naturally as you progress through the story.
