Detailed Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes Recipe
This recipe is straightforward to prepare! This is how it works:
To begin, prepare the potatoes. Scrub, peel, and chop them into large chunks. To ensure that the potatoes cook evenly in the Instant Pot, cut them to roughly the same size.
Fill the Instant Pot halfway with water, then add the chopped potatoes and two teaspoons of salt.
After that, cook! Set the steam release handle or switch to the sealing position on the Instant Pot and secure the lid.
Cook for 12 minutes under high pressure. Remove the lid and quickly release the tension.
Important: Before draining the potatoes, save 3/4 cup of the cooking water
Return the potatoes to the pot and mash them! Continue mashing until the garlic, olive oil, butter, and remaining salt is fully incorporated with the potatoes.
Add the cooking water last. Add 1/4 cup, constantly stirring, until the mash is smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve!
Ingredients For Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes Recipe
This Instant Pot mashed potatoes recipe will require the following elements:
Potatoes:
I recommend Yukon Gold potatoes or a similar variety of yellow potatoes for this recipe. They impart a lovely golden color, a rich buttery flavor, and a delicious creamy texture to the mash.
Water:
This is what you'll need to cook the potatoes in the Instant Pot. In place of sour cream or cream cheese, add some of the starchy, salty cooking water to the mashed potatoes to create their light, smooth texture.
Garlic:
It gives the dish a subtle savory bite.
Extra-virgin olive oil and butter:
These add flavor, butteriness, and richness to the potatoes. The recipe below includes a vegan option!
Chives:
For an oniony, fresh garnish.
And freshly ground black pepper and sea salt:
To bring out the flavors!

Yes, you can make it.
Totally! While I prefer a smooth, creamy texture, you can leave the skins on to make it even easier. One caveat: if you’re using russet potatoes, I’d opt to always peel to skin off since the texture isn’t as texturally appetizing as a red potato, golden potato, or Yukon potato.
You can use a potato masher or wooden spoon for mashing. If you want really fluffy and smooth potatoes, you could use an electric hand mixer.
The Instant Pot has a “Keep Warm” setting that you can use. However, to avoid any potatoes sticking or burning at the bottom, I’d recommend giving them a stir and maybe adding a splash of milk every once in a while.
