The Evolution of Jo-Ann Fabrics
In 1943, the Fabric Shop was opened in Cleveland, Ohio by German immigrants Hilda and Berthold Reich, Sigmund and Mathilda Rohrbach, and Justin and Alma Zimmerman.
It later became Jo-Ann Fabrics in 1963, derived from combining the names of the daughters from both families: Joan and Jacqueline Ann. The company went public in 1969 as Fabri-Centers of America, Inc., and in 1994, it made its first acquisition with the purchase of Cloth World, expanding its presence to 655 stores at the time. Over the years, Jo-Ann underwent name changes, acquisitions, and leadership transitions, with Leonard Green & Partners currently owning a majority stake in the company. In 2021, Joann went public on the Nasdaq market.
