Who is Tyler Myers?

Tyler Paul Myers, born on February 1, 1990, is a professional ice hockey defenseman playing for the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League (NHL). 

Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round (12th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Myers received the Calder Memorial Trophy for the NHL's best rookie at the conclusion of the 2009–10 season. 

He holds the distinction of being the tallest active player in the NHL.  Initially nicknamed "The Big Easy" or "Big Tex" due to his Houston birthplace, Myers acquired the moniker "Chaos Giraffe" from fans after joining Vancouver.

Born in Houston and raised in Calgary, Myers also boasts an impressive international career representing Canada.  He has secured gold medals at prestigious events such as the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships, the 2009 World Junior Championships, and the 2023 IIHF World Championships.

Junior Career:

• Myers was the 19th overall selection by Kelowna Rockets in the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft.
• Prior to the WHL, he played minor hockey at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame with the Hounds.
• Started major junior career with the Rockets in 2005–06.
• Ranked fourth among North American draft-eligible skaters by the NHL's Central Scouting Services in 2007–08.

Buffalo Sabres:

• Selected 12th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres.
• Won the 2009 Ed Chynoweth Cup with Kelowna Rockets.
• Signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres on May 11, 2009.
• Started the 2009–10 season with the Sabres.
• Recorded first NHL point (assist) on October 8, 2009, against the Phoenix Coyotes.
• Scored first NHL goal against the New York Islanders.
• Established himself as the top defenseman on the Sabres roster.
• Named NHL Rookie of the Month in January 2010.
• Awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy in June 2010.
• Extended contract with the Sabres for 7 years on September 15, 2011.
• Suspended for 3 games on March 13, 2012, for boarding Scott Gomez.
• Signed with Klagenfurt AC during the 2012 NHL lockout.
• Missed remainder of the 2012–13 season due to a broken bone in his leg.

Winnipeg Jets:

• Traded to the Winnipeg Jets on February 11, 2015.
• Season-ending surgeries announced by the Jets on March 24, 2016.
• Suffered a lower-body injury in the 2016–17 season, requiring surgery and ending the season.
• Played the entire 2017–18 season with the Jets, reaching the Western Conference Final.

Vancouver Canucks:

• Signed as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks on July 1, 2019.
• Scored his first goal as a Canuck on December 7, 2019, in a game against the Buffalo Sabres, one of his former teams.
