However, ghost-Ernest appears just in time to save Kevin and his family. In a twist of events, Frank, Kevin's father, accidentally kills human-Ernest while trying to attack the ghost.
After the ordeal, Kevin tells the government agents that the ghost disappeared after he was able to get closure. However, he leaves out the fact that he was able to reunite June, who is now a grown woman, with her ghost dad. The touching reunion between June and ghost-Ernest is the final goodbye, as the ghost fades away and is finally able to move on.
In the last scene of the movie, Kevin and Joy take one last look at the attic, hoping that Ernest can still see them wherever he is. They hold hands and leave the attic as the movie ends. There is no We Have a Ghost after credits scene.

In the end, Tig Notaro's character, Dr. Monroe, is uneasy with the plan to possibly hurt ghost-Ernest and helps him escape.

The mountain background was shot in Bozeman, Montana, and added to the setting using visual effects.
