In March 1967, shortly before completing law school, McConnell enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve as a private in Louisville, Kentucky, which was a highly sought-after position because Reserve units were not typically sent to combat during the Vietnam War. He reported for duty at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on July 9, 1967, just two days after taking the bar exam, and completed his training on August 15, 1967. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with optic neuritis upon arrival and was declared unfit for military service. After five weeks at Fort Knox, he was honorably discharged. During his political campaigns, McConnell's opponents have frequently raised concerns about his brief time in military service.
