The inaugural edition of the Academy of Country Music Awards, also known as the ACM Awards, took place in 1966, with the aim of recognizing the industry's achievements in the preceding year. The event marked a significant milestone as it was the first country music awards program organized by a major organization. The academy's renowned "hat" trophy was designed in 1968. The ceremony was broadcasted for the first time on ABC in 1972. Later in 1979, the academy partnered with Dick Clark Productions for producing the show. The production was led by Dick Clark and Al Schwartz, with Gene Weed serving as the director.

ACM Awards 2023 Location
After being held in Las Vegas and Nashville in recent years, the 2023 ACM Awards will take place at the Ford Centre in Frisco, Texas, marking a new location for the event. While Dolly Parton co-hosted the 2022 Awards, this will be the first time that Garth Brooks will host an awards show anywhere. During the ceremony, ACM host Dolly Parton was joined by Kelsea Ballerini to perform "Big Dreams and Faded Dreams" from Parton's new album. The Submissions for the Awards were opened on January 9, 2023, at 11 a.m. CT / 9 a.m. PT, and this was continued until January 27, 2023, at 7 p.m. CT / 5 p.m. PT. The changes aimed at aligning with the current state of the industry's music, visual content, and radio broadcasts have undergone considerable transformation and expansion over time.
