Roku Remote Basics

Before pairing the Roku remote with your Roku device, you need to consider a few things. There are two types of remotes: Roku simple remote and Roku voice remote. Roku simple remote is like a traditional TV remote that uses invisible infrared light to transmit a message to the streaming device. To use this, you need to point the remote directly in front of the device while pressing the buttons.

Unlike a simple remote, the Roku voice remote does not need to be pointed directly to the device. It will be connected over a wireless network and paired with the Roku device. You can press and hold the voice button in the remote to give a command or search for your favorite show.

Now, let’s find out how to pair the remote with the Roku device.

Pairing Process

Pairing the Roku remote with your device is very simple. If you have a Roku simple remote, there is no need for pairing. You just need to insert the correct batteries and use it like a normal remote. But voice remotes need pairing. You can pair the voice remote during your initial setup process of your Roku device.

Voice remotes will come with or without a pairing button. If a microphone pinhole is below the power button, the remote will have a pairing button, which can be found below the battery compartment. If a microphone pinhole is found to the left of the power button, it will not have a pairing button.

Instructions to Pair a Voice Remote

You need to follow different pairing methods based on the model of your voice remote. Follow these steps to pair a voice remote with your device:

Voice remote with a pairing button:

  • Insert the batteries into the remote.
  • If your remote is in a pairing mode, then the status light near the pairing button will flash.
  • Sometimes, the status light will not flash. You need to press and hold the pairing button for few moments until you can see the flash.
  • Now your remote is ready to pair.

Voice remote without a pairing button:

  • If your remote doesn’t have a pairing button, you need to press and hold both the Home and Back button.
  • You need to hold them until you see the flash (In this remote, the status light will be seen near the microphone pinhole)
  • After this, the remote will be ready for pairing.

If you missed pairing the voice remote during the setup process, you can pair it later. Here is how you can do it:

  • If you have another remote, press the Home button.
  • Select the “Settings” menu.
  • Select the option “Remotes & devices” and select “Add devices”.
  • Now, click on the “Remote” option and select “Continue”.
  • In the Remote setup screen, images of remotes with different microphone pinhole locations can be seen. You need to select which kind of remote is yours.
  • Your device will be in pairing mode now and it will start searching for new remotes to pair.
  • Now you need to follow the previously given steps to pair your remote based on the location of the microphone pinhole.

By following these instructions, you can pair your remote and it will be ready to use.
