A Tale of Two Sisters Explained

The South Korean psychological horror film, "A Tale of Two Sisters," follows the story of Su-mi, a teenage girl who returns home from a mental institution to live with her father, younger sister Su-yeon, and her stepmother Eun-Joo. Su-mi becomes protective of her sister and suspects that Eun-Joo is responsible for her bruises. As events unfold, it becomes clear that Su-mi has dissociative identity disorder, and her sister has been dead for a long time. Su-mi's hallucinations have made her believe that her sister is still alive. Eun-joo is killed by Su-yeon's ghost, and Su-mi is sent back to the mental institution. Flashbacks reveal that Su-mi's mother committed suicide after discovering her husband's infidelity with Eun-Joo, which caused Su-mi to suffer from shock and psychosis.

A Tale of Two Sisters Ending Explained

The movie "A Tale of Two Sisters" ultimately reveals a twist ending that leaves the audience with a lot of questions. Su-mi and her father were alone in the house the entire time, and it was revealed that Su-mi suffered from dissociative identity disorder. She had two personalities: herself and a ruder, more distant variation of her stepmom Eun-Joo. The "body" in the sack that Su-mi was whipping was actually a porcelain doll, and she was the one who killed the pet bird. Su-yeon was also revealed to be long dead, and her presence was actually the result of Su-mi's hallucinations.

Su-mi is sent back to the mental institution by her father and Eun-joo, but she rebuffs Eun-joo's attempts at reconciliation. That night, Eun-joo hears footsteps in Su-yeon's old bedroom, and the ghost actually exists. Su-yeon's real ghost crawls out of the closet and kills Eun-joo. Meanwhile, Su-mi appears to have finally found peace.

Flashbacks reveal the tragic events that led Su-mi to be institutionalized. Her father engaged in an adulterous affair with Eun-joo, their in-home nurse, while their terminally ill mother was still alive. This upset the sisters and drove their mother to hang herself in Su-yeon's bedroom closet. Su-yeon attempted to revive her, but the closet collapsed on top of her. Eun-Joo saw Su-yeon suffocating and decided to save her, but Su-mi arrived and criticized Eun-joo for interfering with her family. Angry at Su-mi's criticisms, Eun-joo left Su-yeon to die and told Su-mi that she'll "regret this moment." Su-mi left the house, unaware of both her sister's and her mother's fate.
