The Gillen family spokesperson told the Newtownabbey Times that Aodhán was on his way to work when he was hit by a vehicle in the Mayfield area. The family is requesting prayers for Aodhán and themselves during this difficult time. On Thursday, April 6th, 2023, Aodhán passed away peacefully at the RVH. He was the beloved son of Margaret and Michael, and a much-loved brother to Eoin, Cian, and Corin. Aodhán's funeral procession will depart from his family home at 40 Mayfield Walk BT36 7WR at 11:15 am on Monday, April 10th, and will proceed to St. Bernard's Church in Glengormley for a Requiem Mass at 12:00 noon. "We as a club cannot fathom the unimaginable pain Aodhán’s family and friends are experiencing at present, and we offer them our sincere condolences at this devastating time. We also offer our sincere condolences to all at Carrick Rangers and Newington FC, both clubs in which Aodhán has many close friends and was equally held in the high esteem he was at Dundela FC. Our players and staff have been devastated upon hearing this news. Having sadly experienced the loss of a player in the past, we as a club will provide all the necessary support mechanisms for players and staff going forward. Rest in peace Aodhán."
