Apex Legends Overview

Apex Legends is an online video game created by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. It is a battle royale-hero shooter game that is free-to-play and supports cross-platform play. It was initially released in February 2019 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, followed by Nintendo Switch in March 2021, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in March 2022. The mobile version, Apex Legends Mobile, was released for Android and iOS devices in May 2022.

Before each match, players form squads of two or three and choose from a selection of Legends, pre-designed characters that possess unique abilities. The game has two modes: Battle Royale and Arenas. In Battle Royale, teams of up to 20 three-person squads or 30 two-person duos parachute onto an island and search for weapons and supplies to eliminate all other players in combat. The island's available playing area shrinks over time, forcing players to keep moving and avoid being caught outside of the play area. The final surviving team wins the round. In Arenas, three-player squads compete against each other in a 3v3 team deathmatch to win a series of rounds. A team wins when they have a minimum of three points and are two points ahead of the opposing team.

Apex Legends is set in the same science fiction universe as Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall series, and some characters from Titanfall appear in the game either as minor characters or playable Legends. The game's development started in late 2016, but it was kept under wraps until its release. Its 2019 release was a surprise, as it was assumed that Respawn Entertainment was working on a third installment of the Titanfall series, the studio's previous major game. Apex Legends received positive reviews from critics, who praised its gameplay, progression system, and incorporation of elements from different genres. It was considered a worthy competitor to other battle royale games. By the end of its first week, the game had over 25 million players, and by its first month, it had over 50 million. As of April 2021, it had approximately 100 million players, making it one of the most played video games of all time in terms of player count.

Apex Legends Gameplay

Apex Legends is a free-to-play online multiplayer battle royale game with squads of three players using pre-made characters known as "Legends" that have unique abilities similar to hero shooters. The game features various modes, including single and two-player squads. During the match, players select one of the 23 playable characters with a unique design, personality, and abilities that provide different playstyles. The squad is then placed on an aircraft that passes over the game map, with one player in each squad acting as the jumpmaster. Once on the ground, the squad scavenges for weapons, armor, and equipment scattered around buildings or crates. The game includes a nonverbal communication "ping system" to communicate certain directions, weapon locations, enemies, and suggested strategies. The safe zone around a randomly-selected point on the map reduces over time, forcing encounters and confining squads to smaller spaces. The last squad left alive is crowned the "Apex Champions" of the match. Players who are knocked down can be revived by their squadmates, and if they are killed completely, they can still be resurrected if their team member(s) collect their respawn banner within a time limit and bring it to one of several beacons on the island.

Additionally, Season 9 introduced a new permanent mode called "Arena," where players form into three-player squads and fight against another squad in a 3v3 team deathmatch. The mode borrows mechanics from other shooters such as Counter-Strike and Valorant, and players spawn in a "shop" where they can purchase equipment and charges of their Legend's abilities using materials earned in previous rounds. The mode is the first permanent deviation away from the battle royale format and was later removed in Season 16.
