Assassin's Creed Valhalla is an action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The game takes place during the Viking expansion into the British Isles in the years 872-878 AD, and players control Eivor Varinsdottir, a Viking raider trying to establish a new Viking clan in England. The game features a fictional story that revolves around the centuries-old conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order. In addition to the main story, the game also includes a framing story set in the 21st century, where players follow Layla Hassan, an Assassin who relives Eivor's memories to find a way to save the Earth from destruction. Assassin's Creed Valhalla features an open world with multiple regions that players can explore freely. Assassin's Creed Valhalla, a 2020 action role-playing video game, was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the twelfth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series and a sequel to Assassin's Creed Odyssey, set during the Viking expansions into the British Isles in the years 872-878 AD. Players control Eivor Varinsdottir, a Viking raider, as she attempts to establish a new Viking clan in England and becomes involved in the conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order. Development of Valhalla began in 2017 and involved fourteen other Ubisoft studios worldwide, as well as Sperasoft. Many individuals who had worked on past Assassin's Creed games returned for Valhalla, including Ashraf Ismail, the creative director for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Origins; Darby McDevitt, the lead writer for Black Flag and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and co-writer of Assassin's Creed Unity; and composers Jesper Kyd and Sarah Schachner. Valhalla was praised for its historical accuracy, Norse mythology-inspired narrative elements, and a return to traditional Assassin's Creed gameplay elements.
The game was released in November 2020 for PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Stadia, followed by the PlayStation 5 version on November 12. It received generally positive reviews, though criticized for its length and technical issues. Valhalla was the biggest launch in the Assassin's Creed series to date, selling the most copies within its first week, and becoming the second most profitable Ubisoft title of all time. Ubisoft continued to support Valhalla with additional content, including three paid story expansions, and will be followed by Assassin's Creed Mirage, set in Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age in 2023.
