In an alternate history 1955, Atomic Heart's setting is the Soviet Union's primary scientific research facility, Facility 3826. In 1936, scientist Dmitry Sechenov invented the Polymer, a liquidized programmable module that led to significant technological advancements in energy and robotics, and reduced the need for manual labor. During World War II, the Soviets gained an upper hand, but just before Germany's defeat, they released the Brown Plague virus, resulting in millions of deaths and creating a demand for Soviet robots to compensate for the worker shortage. To aid in the post-war reconstruction, Dr. Sechenov created a networked artificial intelligence called "Kollektiv 1.0" that increased robot efficiency. The latest invention from Sechenov is the Thought neuroconnector, which integrates the Polymer into the human body, allowing people to remotely control robots. Along with Kollektiv 2.0, Sechenov claims that Thought will bring about a true post-labor era worldwide. However, during the official launch of Kollektiv 2.0 on June 13, 1955, chaos ensued at Facility 3826.

Atomic Heart Game Play
Atomic Heart is a first-person shooter game that includes customization elements commonly found in role-playing games, as well as stealth components.
