He was sent to a reform school at the age of 7 and later played baseball there, developing his talent as a hitter. In 1914, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles minor league team and was soon sold to the Boston Red Sox. He quickly became a star player and helped the Red Sox win three World Series titles.
In 1919, the Red Sox sold Ruth to the New York Yankees, and he went on to become one of the most famous athletes in American history. During his time with the Yankees, he set numerous records, including the record for most home runs in a season and the career home run record. He retired in 1935 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Ruth died of cancer on August 16, 1948, at the age of 53.
