Canelo Álvarez (born Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán on July 18, 1990) is a Mexican professional boxer. He has won multiple world championships in four weight classes from light middleweight to light heavyweight, including unified titles in three of those weight classes and lineal titles in two. Álvarez is the first and only boxer in history to become undisputed champion at super middleweight, having held the WBA (Super), WBC (Franchise) Ring magazine titles since 2020, and the IBF and WBO titles since 2021. 

Álvarez began boxing when he was around 13 years old, after watching his older brother Rigoberto debut as a professional boxer. In 2004, he won the silver medal at the Junior Mexican National Championships, held in Sinaloa. He became the 2005 Junior Mexican National Boxing Champion in Tuxtla Gutiérrez at the age of 15. His amateur record was 44–2 with 12 knockouts.

Álvarez turned professional in 2005 at the age of 15. He won his first 10 fights by knockout. In 2008, he won the WBC Silver Light Middleweight Championship by defeating Ryan Rhodes. In 2009, he won the WBA (Unified) Light Middleweight Championship by defeating Carlos Baldomir.

In 2011, Álvarez faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the WBC and WBA (Super) Light Middleweight Championships. Mayweather won the fight by unanimous decision. This was Álvarez's only professional loss.

After the loss to Mayweather, Álvarez won his next 11 fights, including victories over Josesito López, Alfredo Angulo, and Miguel Cotto. In 2015, he won the WBC Middleweight Championship by defeating Gennady Golovkin by majority decision.

In 2017, Álvarez faced Golovkin in a rematch. The fight ended in a draw. In 2018, Álvarez defeated Golovkin in a trilogy fight by unanimous decision. In 2020, Álvarez returned to super middleweight and defeated Callum Smith by unanimous decision to win the WBA (Super) and WBC Super Middleweight Championships. In 2021, he defeated Billy Joe Saunders by technical knockout to win the WBO Super Middleweight Championship. In 2022, he defeated Caleb Plant by technical knockout to win the IBF Super Middleweight Championship, becoming the first and only boxer in history to become undisputed champion at super middleweight.
