Who Is Carl Wagner?

German physical chemist Carl Wilhelm Wagner was born on May 25, 1901. He is most recognized for his groundbreaking work in the field of solid-state chemistry, where his studies of the oxidation rate theory, the counterdiffusion of ions, and defect chemistry helped to improve our understanding of how reactions occur at the atomic level.

He was referred to as the "Father of Solid State Chemistry" at a Solid State Ionics symposium held in 2001 to honour his life and accomplishments. He accepted a position as a research associate at the University of Berlin's Bodernstein Institute. He initially met Walter H. Schottky in Berlin, and Schottky urged him to write a book with him on thermodynamic issues.
