Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an action-adventure game created by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. Serving as a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019), the game picks up the story five years after the events of the first game. It follows the journey of Cal Kestis, a young Jedi Knight, and his companions as they fight to survive under the oppressive rule of the Galactic Empire. Survivor was released on April 28, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. The game has garnered positive reviews from critics, who praised its engaging gameplay, well-crafted narrative, expansive open world, and the impressive performance of Cameron Monaghan as Cal. However, there were some criticisms regarding certain aspects of the story and technical issues that were present during the game's initial release.

In January 2022, the development of a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was officially announced. The game, titled Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, was unveiled in May 2022 during Star Wars Celebration along with a CGI teaser trailer. Developed by Respawn Entertainment, the game was released on April 28, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.

Game director Stig Asmussen highlighted the utilization of real-time ray tracing and other next-gen capabilities that allowed Respawn to achieve a level of quality surpassing their previous projects. By focusing exclusively on ninth-generation consoles, Survivor benefits from significantly faster load times. The development team no longer needs to support the older PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles that the first game was launched on. This is possible because the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles are equipped with solid-state drives (SSDs), enabling much faster asset loading compared to traditional hard drives.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Gameplay

Combat

In Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the combat mechanics retain many elements from its predecessor while introducing new features. Cal Kestis, the main character, can utilize five different combat stances, each offering unique abilities. The single-blade and double-blade stances from Fallen Order make a return, and the special dual-wield attack now has its own dedicated stance. Originally intended to be playable in the previous game, it was included as a special attack due to time constraints. Additionally, a new stance featuring a Kylo Ren-style crossguard lightsaber has been introduced, requiring precise timing for effective blocking and parrying. Another new stance allows the player to combine a lightsaber with a blaster, enabling both close and ranged attacks. These stances serve different purposes against specific enemy types, prompting players to strategize and select the most suitable weapon. A new Force ability, similar to Kylo Ren's Force stasis power, allows players to freeze enemies and blaster bolts in mid-air.

Level Design

The level design in Jedi: Survivor offers larger, more expansive maps with an increased number of non-player characters compared to Fallen Order. The central area of the planet Koboh is dense, while the outer regions provide more open exploration opportunities. The landing pads of the Mantis spaceship have been relocated to central locations on planets, allowing easier access to different areas. Koboh serves as a recurring location throughout the game, with new pathways unlocking during subsequent visits. Exploring the world not only enhances customization options for Cal but also offers optional areas containing valuable skills, upgrades, and perks to make him more powerful and prepared for upcoming challenges. Fast travel at meditation points simplifies exploration by enabling quick transportation between discovered points on the planet. However, Respawn ensured that fast travel is not necessary for regular traversal or story progression, aiming to strike a balance between convenience and maintaining the integrity of the environment.

Jedi Meditation Chambers

Throughout Koboh, players can discover seven Jedi Chambers inspired by the High Republic era. These chambers likened to the Shrines in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, present puzzles and challenges for players to solve. Completing these chambers rewards players with perks or skill points to enhance their abilities. The Jedi Chambers become accessible after rescuing Zee from the Chamber of Duality.

Customization

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor greatly expands player cosmetic customization compared to its predecessor. Players have extensive options to customize Cal's appearance, including his entire outfit, hairstyle, and facial hair. The addition of a white lightsaber blade provides a new color option for lightsaber customization
