The film follows Gloria, an unemployed writer struggling with alcoholism, who returns to her hometown and reunites with her childhood friend, Oscar. After a giant monster begins rampaging through Seoul, South Korea, Gloria realizes she has a telepathic connection to the creature and may be the only one who can stop its destruction.

"Colossal" received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for Hathaway and Sudeikis' performances and the film's unique blend of genres. The movie grossed over $4 million worldwide, making it a modest box office success.

Colossal Ending Explained

The ending of "Colossal" is about Gloria's journey of breaking free from toxic relationships. She first turns down Tim's offer to be with him, realizing that he's not the right person for her. She also successfully overcomes her drinking habit. However, she still needs to distance herself from Oscar and his abusive behavior. She decides to mentally "go to Seoul" and face her fears.

As she stands in front of the robot in Seoul, we see the monster appearing over the park in America where Oscar is. Gloria picks up an object, and the monster flings Oscar and the robot away, saving Seoul. This scene represents Gloria standing up to Oscar and overcoming her fears.

In the last scene, Gloria is in a bar and talks to the bartender. The bartender offers her a drink, but Gloria makes a face, indicating that she's moved on from her alcoholism. The film ends on an ambiguous note, as we don't know if Gloria will take the drink or not. However, we can infer that she has been through enough to resist the temptation this time around.

Overall, the ending of "Colossal" portrays Gloria's journey of breaking free from abusive relationships and conquering her fears. It's a powerful reminder that we can overcome our inhibitions and take control of our lives.

Colossal Movie Plot

Gloria is a struggling writer and alcoholic living in New York City with her boyfriend, Tim. After Tim breaks up with her due to her behavior, she moves back to her hometown of Mainhead, New Hampshire. There, she reconnects with her childhood friend Oscar, who runs his father's bar and offers her a job. Gloria's work at the bar aggravates her addiction as she drinks with Oscar and his friends until the morning.

Meanwhile, a giant monster begins destroying Seoul, South Korea. Gloria discovers that she has the power to control the monster by walking through a playground at exactly 8:05 am. She shares her discovery with Oscar and his friends, and they watch as she dances in the playground, causing the monster to mimic her movements on a news feed.

However, when a missile strikes the monster, Gloria feels the pain and lashes out, destroying a helicopter and killing its pilots. She collapses in horror at the destruction she has caused and vows to avoid both the playground and alcohol. Gloria tries to make amends by having the monster spell out an apology in Korean, which is well-received by the South Korean people and media.

Gloria spends the night with Joel, one of Oscar's friends, and discovers a drunk Oscar controlling a giant robot to taunt South Korea. She confronts him, and he becomes jealous when he thinks something happened between Gloria and Joel. The next day, Oscar demands that Gloria have a beer, threatening to return to the playground if she refuses.

During a confrontation at the bar, Tim visits Gloria and tries to get her to leave with him, but she stays to prevent Oscar's destructive behavior. Gloria and Oscar visit her childhood playground, and she recalls that as a child, she made a paper diorama of Seoul that was destroyed by a jealous Oscar. During a thunderstorm, Gloria's anger triggers lightning, striking both of them and causing their childhood toys to manifest as a giant monster and a robot.

In the present, Gloria realizes that Oscar's manipulative behavior stems from his self-hatred and desire to feel important, manifested through the robot. Gloria decides to leave town, but Oscar races her to the playground and incapacitates her, causing widespread destruction and threatening further rampages for every day she's not with him.
