Destiny 2 Overview
Destiny 2 is an online first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie. Initially released in 2017 as a pay-to-play game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows, it transitioned to a free-to-play model under the title "New Light" on October 1, 2019.
Subsequently, the game was also released on Stadia the following month and on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms in December 2020. While Activision initially published the game, Bungie acquired the publishing rights to the franchise on December 31, 2018. Destiny 2 serves as the sequel to 2014's Destiny and its expansions.
Set in a science fiction world with mythic elements, the game offers a multiplayer "shared-world" environment, incorporating elements of role-playing games. Similar to its predecessor, Destiny 2 features various activities divided between player versus environment (PvE) and player versus player (PvP) game modes.
In addition to the main story missions, PvE activities include three-player "strikes," dungeons, and six-player raids. Each destination in the game also offers a free roam patrol mode, which includes public events and exclusive activities not present in the original Destiny. These activities emphasize exploration and interactions with non-player characters (NPCs), whereas the original Destiny limited NPCs to social spaces. PvP modes encompass objective-based game modes and traditional deathmatches.
Players assume the role of Guardians, who are tasked with protecting the last safe city on Earth using a power called Light. They defend humanity against various alien races and confront the looming threat of the Darkness. Similar to the original Destiny, the game introduces expansion packs that expand the story and introduce new content throughout the game.
The first year of Destiny 2 featured two small expansions, Curse of Osiris and Warmind, while the second year began with the larger expansion, Forsaken, which included gameplay overhauls. Year Three commenced with the release of Shadowkeep in October 2019, which marked the start of standalone releases not requiring previous premium content.
Alongside Shadowkeep, Destiny 2 was re-released as New Light, a free-to-play version that included access to the first two expansions. Separate seasonal passes were introduced to provide access to each season's content. Although the base Destiny 2 game is free-to-play, additional content requires purchasing.
Year Four witnessed a significant overhaul of the game, as a substantial portion of content from the first three years, including the base campaign, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind, were removed from the game and placed in the Destiny Content Vault.
Concurrently, Year Four commenced with the release of the fifth expansion, Beyond Light, which introduced the power of Darkness to players. Bungie described this expansion as the start of a new era for the franchise, to be followed by The Witch Queen in early 2022 and Lightfall in early 2023. The final chapter, called The Final Shape, will conclude the "Light and Darkness Saga," the first saga of Destiny, before the beginning of a new saga.
Upon its release, Destiny 2 received generally favorable reviews from critics. It garnered praise for its improvements, particularly in terms of storytelling, gameplay, visuals, exploration, multiplayer, and public events. However, opinions were divided regarding the weapon re-categorization, the Leviathan raid, and new game modes. Destiny 2 was nominated for and won various awards, including recognition at The Game Awards 2017 and Game Critics Awards.
