As a senior, he led the Tigers to the Class AA (now 2A) state championship in 1981, scoring 24 points in the title game, a 52–43 victory over the Timberline Blazers of Lacey. After graduating he enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he played for the Huskies under head coach Marv Harshman. Schrempf played four seasons for the Huskies, leading them to the NCAA Tournament in each of his final three seasons. He was a first-team All-Pacific-10 Conference selection as a senior in 1985 and was named the conference's Player of the Year.
