The game follows a heartwarming story of the player's return to their childhood home in the countryside, seeking solace and peace from the chaos of city life. As they lay down to rest in the backyard play area they used to love, they find themselves transported to a magical world called Dreamlight Valley, where they encounter Merlin, who explains the troubled history of the valley.
Dreamlight Valley used to be a place of joy and harmony, where Disney and Pixar characters lived together peacefully. However, the disappearance of their beloved ruler led to the growth of Night Thorns, which caused "The Forgetting" - the loss of memories for many of the characters who lived there. As a result, the once-beautiful valley was overrun by Night Thorns and fell into disrepair. The player decides to take on the task of restoring Dreamlight Valley to its former glory.
To begin their journey, the player uses their own magic called "Dreamlight" to clear away the Giant Night Thorns blocking access to a house that looks like their own from back in reality. As they progress, they recover hidden memories and meet some of the characters who stayed behind in the valley, including Mickey Mouse, Scrooge McDuck, and Goofy. The player learns that they can help the characters recover their lost memories and bring them back to Dreamlight Valley by unlocking the sealed doorways to other realms using Dreamlight.
To accomplish this, the player must perform various activities around the village, including fishing, gardening, and repairing tools to aid the characters in their own businesses and daily lives. Along the way, they help characters like Remy, WALL-E, Moana, and Kristoff, and overcome challenges posed by Ursula, Scar, and Mother Gothel. By helping these characters, the player earns more Dreamlight to unlock additional realms and further restore Dreamlight Valley.
As the player progresses through the game, they encounter a strange sense of déjà vu, suggesting a deeper connection between their own memories and the history of Dreamlight Valley. The game culminates in a heartwarming conclusion where the player, with the help of the characters they have met and restored, overcomes the Night Thorns and restores the valley to its former glory.
