Claire Stoermer and Kazembe Ajamu, both teachers, gave birth to Zendaya. She began performing at a young age in Oakland, California, where she studied hula with the Academy of Hawaiian Arts and danced with the hip-hop dance troupe Future Shock Oakland. She continued her education at Orinda's Cal Shakes Conservatory Program, San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater, and Oakland's Oakland School for the Arts.
