Dracula Untold

Dracula Untold is a 2014 action-fantasy film directed by Gary Shore and starring Luke Evans as the legendary vampire, Vlad Tepes, also known as Dracula. The film explores the origins of the iconic character and portrays him as a hero rather than a villain.

The story is set in the 15th century in Transylvania, where Vlad Tepes is the prince of his people. When the Turks demand that he provide them with a thousand boys, including his own son, to serve as soldiers in their army, Vlad must make a difficult decision. In order to save his family and his kingdom, he turns to the dark forces of vampirism, seeking the power to defeat his enemies.

The film portrays Vlad as a sympathetic character, who becomes a vampire out of necessity rather than desire. He struggles with the moral implications of his decision, and his transformation into a vampire is depicted as a tragic event rather than a source of empowerment.

The film also introduces a romantic subplot, as Vlad's wife, played by Sarah Gadon, becomes embroiled in the conflict between her husband and the Turks. Dominic Cooper plays the role of Mehmed II, the sultan of the Ottoman Empire and Vlad's primary adversary.

Dracula Untold received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising its action sequences and performances, while others criticized its lack of originality and adherence to genre conventions. Despite its mixed reception, the film performed reasonably well at the box office, grossing over $200 million worldwide.

Dracula Untold is an action-packed and visually stunning film that offers a unique interpretation of the classic vampire tale. It presents a sympathetic and complex portrayal of its titular character and explores themes of sacrifice, power, and morality.

Dracula Untold Ending Explained

Vlad's wife, Mirena, discovers his condition after seeing him holding silver to keep himself weak when near his people. Vlad's increased strength also arouses suspicion among his subjects. That night, the Ottoman army marches on the Cozia Monastery where Vlad sends most of the castle's subjects for safety. Vlad commands an enormous swarm of bats to repel the army, but a handful of Turks infiltrate the monastery, kill many of the inhabitants, and kidnap Îngeraș, Vlad's son. Mirena tries to save her son but falls from the edge of the monastery wall and dies. Dying, Mirena urges Vlad to drink her blood before the sun rises and lifts his curse so that he will have the strength to save their son. Vlad reluctantly drinks her blood, triggering his final transformation into a full-blooded vampire and granting him even greater powers, and in doing so he frees the ancient vampire from his cave.

As he does so, he summons black storm clouds to block out the sun. Vlad returns to the monastery and turns the small group of survivors and mortally wounded into vampires as well. Vlad and his vampire army easily massacre the Ottoman soldiers at their camp, with Vlad himself going after Mehmed, who is holding Îngeraș captive. Mehmed has lined the floor of his tent with silver coins, reducing Vlad's strength and speed to that of a human. Mehmed fights Vlad with a silver sword and overpowers him, preparing to impale his heart with a wooden stake. However, Vlad turns into a flock of bats and evades him, killing Mehmed and drinking his blood.

Vlad then sends Îngeraș away before his vampire army preys on him, and dispels the storm clouds so that the vampires, including himself, will burn away and die in the light. However, a man who had previously observed Vlad's nature and wished to serve him drags his dying body out of the sunlight and offers him his blood, which restores Vlad to life. With Vlad presumed dead and Europe saved from the Ottoman invasion, Îngeraș is crowned the new Prince of Wallachia.

In modern-day London, Vlad meets a woman named Mina who resembles Mirena. The vampire who cursed Vlad watches them from afar, following them and saying "Let the games begin." The ending suggests that Vlad/Dracula is still alive and may have a larger role to play in the future, possibly in a sequel or in a larger shared universe of monster movies.

Dracula Untold Plot

In the 15th century, Vlad Drăculea is the Prince of Wallachia and Transylvania. He was once a royal ward in the palace of the Ottoman Empire and trained as a soldier in the Sultan's elite Janissary corps. Known as "Vlad the Impaler, Son of the Dragon," he was feared for slaughtering thousands by impaling them on spears. However, he becomes sickened by his own acts and renounces his past.

Now ruling his domains in peace, Vlad and his soldiers discover a helmet in a stream, which raises concerns of an imminent Ottoman invasion. The stream leads to Broken Tooth Mountain, where they are attacked by an inhumanly strong and fast humanoid creature, killing Vlad's men. Vlad narrowly escapes and learns from a monk that the creature is a vampire named Caligula, who was trapped in the cave centuries ago for making a deal with a demon.

During an Easter feast with his wife Mirena and son Îngeraș, an Ottoman envoy demands a tribute of 1,000 boys to be trained as Janissaries. Vlad refuses, offering himself in their place, but the envoy demands his son in addition. Knowing war is inevitable, Vlad seeks help from the vampire in Broken Tooth Mountain. The vampire offers Vlad his blood, which temporarily gives him the powers of a vampire. If he resists the urge to drink human blood for three days, he will turn back into a human. Otherwise, he will remain a vampire forever, and the ancient vampire will be freed from his cave.

After accepting the offer, Vlad discovers he can transform into a cloud of bats. When the Ottoman army attacks Castle Dracula, Vlad single-handedly defeats them all. He sends most of his subjects to Cozia Monastery for safety.

Dracula Untold is an action-packed film that explores the origins of the legendary vampire and portrays him as a tragic hero. Vlad Tepes struggles with the morality of his actions and ultimately sacrifices himself to protect his family and kingdom from an impending Ottoman invasion.
