The story follows Eo, a donkey working in a Polish circus, who is separated from his beloved partner Kasandra when the circus is shut down by animal rights activists. After being taken to a horse stable and then a farm, Eo becomes increasingly depressed and refuses to eat. However, when Kasandra visits him on his birthday and wishes for his dreams to come true, Eo escapes and embarks on a journey through a dark forest and an empty town. He witnesses the cruelty of hunters and fur factory workers but also encounters kindness from strangers like a soccer team who takes him to a bar. Unfortunately, members of the losing team beat him nearly to death, and Eo ends up in an animal hospital and a truck full of animals bound for a slaughterhouse. Along the way, he briefly finds temporary refuge with a priest named Vito, who treats him with kindness despite admitting to having eaten donkey meat before. The story ends with the sound of a captive bolt pistol, suggesting that Eo may have met a tragic fate.
EO Ending Explained
Eo does die in the Movie, and it is not shown in a straightforward manner but in the movie, one can come to the conclusion from the given inferences that we can safe to say. The movie tries to depict the anthropology of the relationship between man and animal. and how it is blood-soken but inevitable in the nature of exchanges between various species of different biomes. But as we humans have the ability to communicate and create stories. we have overcome our biome restrictions and ability to think forward but other species cannot they are either restricted by biology or biome in that case there might be outliers such as crows. but the movie also eerily portrays how that thinking has affected the biomes by showcasing the human infrastructure, the beautiful biomes, and the geography of Poland in an Anthropocene framework where man-made things dominate the biome. So the underlying death of Eo in the movie shows that we are our creators and destroyers in the Anthropocene framework. We have come to that conclusion with two specific locations shown in the movie. A circus where Eo worked and the Butcher shop where Eo was supposedly killed as we hear the gunshot. In Both places, there is a clear hierarchy of power showcasing that Eo always lived in a place where human agency is shown explicitly or required as part of the “ Humans Job” as in both case trainer needs to train Eo to make creative moves for the circus audience and butcher needs to kill the animal for consumption as meat is a good source of protein.
Does EO die in the movie?
Yes as we can recall from the movie in a scene-by-scene manner EO stands at a bridge overlooking a waterfall, he observes the water's violent flow curling back into itself, seeking a more tranquil past. However, EO cannot escape his bleak reality. A cattle-herding butcher locates him, mistaking him for just another animal and leading him toward a slaughterhouse. Despite EO's discomfort and unfamiliarity with his bovine companions, he continues to walk forward, resigned to his fate. EO's tragic demise, like all the other instances of animal cruelty, happens away from our view. We only hear the heart-wrenching sound of the captive bolt pistol, signaling the end of the life we've come to care for. The callous nature of human-animal relationships is painfully depicted through EO's death, and his flesh may end up being consumed by someone like Vito, who enjoys its taste.
Does the Movie EO have a Happy Ending?
No, it does not. The movie portrays characters just as in the real world, with not too much detail but mundane day-to-day lives of humans along with Eo the donkey. The movie is not happy as it does not bring emotive joy enough to make the audience laugh but to think the economic systems we have inherited or currently creating the Anthropocene mark on the lives of animals like Eo the movie also tries to portray the Eo as mute Spectator of human doing things that he could not stop as a species of a donkey he does not have human agency but does have the animal agency that is taking decisions for his survival in the Anthropocene world.
