Escape The Field Overview

"Escape the Field" is a movie that borrows from the concept used in the films "Predators" (2010) and "The Condemned" (2007). These movies involve a group of people being placed in a kill zone where only the strongest can survive. In "Predators," individuals must fight for survival on a planet where they were brought to by predators for training purposes. Similarly, "The Condemned" follows ten condemned criminals who are taken to a deserted island and given the chance to earn their freedom by participating in a deadly game. "Escape the Field" takes a similar approach by dropping its characters in the middle of a cornfield for experimental memory treatments, among other things. Despite having a simple plot, the movie fails to generate the expected emotions in viewers. Films of this nature typically elicit a sense of thrill from the uncertainty of what lies ahead, especially in unknown locations. Previous films have successfully created this palpable feeling, setting high expectations.

Escape The Feld Plot

Sam, Tyler, Ryan, Denise, Ethan, and Cameron wake up in the middle of a cornfield with no recollection of how they got there. Each person possesses an object that they have yet to decipher the purpose of. They follow Ethan's compass, which leads them to the realization that they are not alone in the field. As their hunger and thirst increase, finding a way out of the cornfield becomes more challenging. The creature that shares the space with them kills Denise, leaving them all in grave danger. However, they discover a small faucet on the ground, and with the help of Ethan's compass, they realize that all the other objects are also clues that will lead them to safety. A tree in the field and a metal scarecrow with a shirt containing a map of the cornfield assist in their quest for survival. Despite being hunted by the creature and facing injury and death, the group perseveres and ultimately, only Sam and Tyler remain. The duo reaches the spot where they must use the final two objects to escape the field. The question remains: will they successfully evade the creature and make it out alive, or will they fall victim to its vicious attack?

Escape The Field Review

After watching the film, most viewers will recognize that the entire plot revolves around an experiment, particularly since the characters have no memory of how they ended up in the cornfield. Denise reveals that she has analyzed data for the government, which suggests that they are a part of some form of experiment. Cameron also explains how experiments like selective memory erasure, chemical therapy, and micro-implants are carried out. However, the issue with the storyline is that the tests are not explicitly shown, nor is the experiment's actual motive revealed. The film would have been more effective if the people had a clearer goal to achieve, or if the clues led them to something more concrete. Additionally, the film missed an opportunity to explore the red serum that Ryan was injected with, which seemed to enhance his instincts and strength, and the creature that was once human. Understanding more about the serum's creation and the creature's origins would have been intriguing. Unfortunately, "Escape the Field" does not complete it's expectations. Being lost in an endless cornfield requires heightened awareness, similar to the feeling of being lost in the wilderness or meeting a stranger in an unfamiliar place. While the film conveys insecurity, the element of heightened awareness is lacking. With such an effective setting, the motif of awareness could have been used to better establish the film's thriller vibe. The presence of a real creature, rustling leaves, and the feeling of being alone yet watched could have added more charm to the thriller.

Escape The Field Ending

At the end of the film, it becomes apparent that Sam and Tyler are the only ones with a chance of surviving the cornfield, as all other subjects have perished. Tyler ultimately meets his demise at the hands of the wild man, while Sam manages to escape, albeit briefly. Despite inflicting a fatal wound on the man, Sam herself is stabbed and rendered unconscious. Soon after, agents in protective gear arrive on the scene and whisk her away. In the background, a voice announces the commencement of Phase 2 and the activation of Zone 4, suggesting that what occurred was merely a small part of a much larger experiment. It is possible that Sam will be transported to a different area to undergo further testing. The mention of "all subjects" implies that others like Sam have also emerged as sole survivors in their respective trials and are now progressing to Phase 2. However, as Phase 1 did not deliver the anticipated thrill, Phase 2 may prove to be ineffective, even for Sam.
