Extraction Film
Extraction is an action thriller film released in 2020. Directed by Sam Hargrave in his feature directorial debut and written by Joe Russo, it is based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman. The movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda (making his international film debut), Golshifteh Farahani, Pankaj Tripathi, and David Harbour.
The story revolves around an Australian black ops mercenary who embarks on a mission to rescue the kidnapped son of an Indian crime lord in Dhaka, Bangladesh. However, things take a dangerous turn when he finds himself betrayed by those he trusted. The development of Extraction was announced in 2018, as the Russo Brothers aimed to adapt the 2014 graphic novel into a thrilling film.
While the movie diverges from the source material in certain aspects, the core story remains largely intact. Extraction was released by Netflix on April 24, 2020. It received acclaim for its performances, particularly Chris Hemsworth's portrayal, as well as its cinematography, editing, and action sequences. However, some criticism was directed towards the screenplay.
Extraction garnered immense popularity on Netflix, becoming the most-watched original film in the streaming platform's history. Within the first four weeks, it amassed over 99 million viewers. The film's success has led to the announcement of a sequel, Extraction 2, which is scheduled to be released on June 16, 2023. The main cast is set to return, promising another thrilling chapter in the franchise.
Extraction Ending Explained
The ending of Extraction holds significant meaning, particularly in Tyler's "death" scene and the final shot. The last scene featuring Ovi mirrors Tyler's first scene, where he jumps off a cliff into a deep lagoon, allowing himself to sink to the bottom before resurfacing. Throughout the movie, water serves as a symbol for two important concepts: courage and death.
At the beginning of the film, Tyler, having already lost his wife and son, has become fearless in the face of death. He is even, as Nik suggests, actively seeking it. For Tyler, water is associated with memories of his son at the beach, and his initial plunge into the water signifies a flirtation with death. Throughout the movie, his memories of his son remain blurry until just before he falls into the river at the end, leading the audience to believe he has joined his son in death.
On the other hand, Ovi lacks the courage to approach a girl who smiles at him in his introductory scene. However, as the story progresses, Tyler discovers a new purpose in saving Ovi's life, something he was unable to do for his own son. Simultaneously, Ovi's close encounters with death strip away his fears. His leap from the high dive into the water, his serene moment beneath the surface, and his eventual resurfacing symbolize the courage he has gained.
As both Tyler and Ovi dive into the water at the end, it signifies a sort of rebirth, as they emerge as transformed individuals. Ovi finds strength and bravery within himself, while Tyler, as implied in the trailer for Extraction 2, discovers a newfound purpose to continue on his journey. The water serves as a powerful symbol throughout the film, representing both the embrace of death and the conquest of fear. It showcases the character development of both Tyler and Ovi, culminating in their transformative experiences and the promise of new beginnings.

Extraction Plot
Ovi Mahajan, the son of incarcerated Indian drug lord Ovi Mahajan Sr., sneaks out of his house to visit a club with his friend. Their night takes a tragic turn when they encounter corrupt police officers working for rival Bangladeshi drug lord Amir Asif. Ovi's friend is shot and killed, and Ovi himself is kidnapped. Saju Rav, a former Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army Para Special Forces and Ovi's protector, learns about the abduction and visits Ovi's father in prison.
Ovi Sr. refuses to pay the ransom or give up his territories to Amir, fearing it would damage his reputation. Instead, he orders Saju to rescue his son, threatening to harm Saju's own child if he refuses. Tyler Rake, a former Australian Army Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) operator turned mercenary, is approached by his handler Nik Khan to undertake the mission of saving Ovi in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Tyler accepts the job.
Tyler and Khan's team prepare for the extraction, with the plan to retrieve Ovi and receive payment from Ovi Sr.'s men. Tyler successfully rescues Ovi, eliminating his captors and taking him to the extraction point. However, their escape is complicated when Asif orders Colonel Rashid to initiate a citywide lockdown of Dhaka, preventing their exit. To make matters worse, it is revealed that Ovi Sr.'s bank account has been frozen, leaving him unable to pay the mercenaries as planned.
Saju, seeking to save Ovi himself and avoid paying the mercenaries, kills Tyler's teammates and attempts to kill Tyler. Khan arranges a helicopter for Tyler to leave the city, telling him to abandon Ovi since the contract is no longer valid. Haunted by the memories of his own son, whom he had to leave behind due to illness, Tyler refuses to abandon Ovi. He fights off Saju and evades the corrupt Dhaka Metropolitan Police tactical units working for Asif.
Tyler contacts his friend Gaspar, a retired squad-mate living in Dhaka, who provides them shelter for the night. Gaspar reveals that Asif has put a $10,000,000 bounty on Ovi's head and offers to share it if Tyler allows him to kill Ovi. Tyler refuses, leading to a fierce fight between the two. In a surprising turn, Ovi shoots Gaspar with his own gun, saving Tyler's life.
Tyler calls Saju for help, and they reluctantly team up to escape Dhaka. Tyler creates a diversion while Saju and Ovi pass through a bridge checkpoint. Khan and her remaining mercenaries arrive from the other side of the bridge, engaging in a firefight. Asif watches from a distance as the chaos unfolds. During the skirmish, Saju is shot by Rashid, who is then killed by Khan.
Despite his severe injuries, Tyler instructs Ovi to run to Khan's waiting helicopter. As Ovi escapes to Mumbai with Khan and the extraction team, Tyler, badly wounded, is shot in the neck by Farhad, a young criminal eager to impress Asif. Knowing that Ovi is safe, Tyler falls into the river. Eight months later, Khan encounters Asif in a restroom and takes her revenge by shooting him.
Meanwhile, Ovi practices holding his breath by diving into his school's swimming pool, mirroring the scene when Tyler was introduced. As he resurfaces, he sees a blurred figure resembling Tyler watching over him.
