F-zero 99
F-Zero 99 is a racing game with battle royale elements that Nintendo released in 2023. The game is available for online multiplayer gaming and was developed by Nintendo Software Technology. It was introduced during a Nintendo Direct presentation on September 14, 2023, and can be downloaded for free by subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) service.
This game brings back the F-Zero series, which had its last release in 2004. It follows the 99-style battle royale format, where players can compete against up to 98 others online. The goal is to outlast opponents and complete the race. Players have a power meter, and if it runs out due to damage, they get eliminated. However, players can earn a "KO" by eliminating someone with low power to extend their own meter. Additionally, collecting Super Sparks allows players to access a higher road called the Skyway, providing a speed boost for a limited time. The game is a modern take on the classic F-Zero title from the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) released in 1990.
F-zero 99 Gameplay
Similar to Pac-Man 99, Super Mario Bros. 35, and Tetris 99, F-Zero 99 transforms the traditional gameplay of F-Zero into a battle royale experience. The game retains the graphical style, vehicles, and tracks from the original SNES game. Drawing inspiration from F-Zero X, it incorporates a speed boost system.
The gameplay closely resembles the classic F-Zero, but it adapts to the battle royale format, allowing players to compete with 98 others in real-time. The objective is to outlast opponents and finish the race in first place. Each player's vehicle is equipped with an energy meter, serving as both health and a reserve for temporary speed boosts. Collisions and boosts deplete the meter, leading to elimination if empty, but it can be refilled in pit zones.
Collecting Super Sparks, dropped by other racers and special golden bumper cars, fills a Super Boost meter, granting access to the Skyway—a floating road above the racetrack—for a limited speed boost. As races progress, players at the back get eliminated, replaced by slower-moving bumper cars, adding another challenge. A rechargeable spin move helps players knock away these cars and those of opponents.
