Fortnite

Fortnite is an online video game made by Epic Games and came out in 2017. It has three different versions: Fortnite Battle Royale, where up to 100 players compete to be the last one standing; Fortnite: Save the World, a cooperative game where up to four players fight off zombie-like creatures and build defenses; and Fortnite Creative, where players can create their own worlds and battle areas. Save the World and Battle Royale started as early access titles in 2017, while Creative was released on December 6, 2018.

Fortnite Battle Royale became hugely popular, drawing over 125 million players in less than a year and making hundreds of millions of dollars each month. The whole Fortnite game earned $9 billion in revenue by December 2019. You can play Save the World on macOS, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Battle Royale and Creative are available on those platforms, plus Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch. The game also came out with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Fortnite Update V27.10

The v27.10 update brings the Yacht Heist and Verse Triad Infiltration templates, new weapons and consumables, updates to Matchmaking Portal and other devices, an option for automatic translation for your islands in Discover, and more!

New Yacht Heist Template Island Featuring Patchwork!

The Yacht Heist Template Island is a template island in the Creative toolset that shows you how to create a single-player stealth island, and showcases how to use Patchwork devices to create an adaptive soundtrack as the game progresses.

New Triad Infiltration Template Island!

The Triad Infiltration Template Island is a UEFN template that shows you how to create an asymmetric multiplayer game where three different teams battle for control of objectives. The template teaches how to balance teams asymmetrically using Verse to create engaging team dynamics and frantic gameplay.

You Want It, We've Got It!

  • Wildwasp Jar
  • Dual Suppressed Pistols
  • Inkquisitor’s Suppressed SMG

New Consumables

Updates to the Matchmaking Portal Device

The Matchmaking Portal device has been reworked so that players have the same options that they have available in the frontend when matchmaking. Instead of two interactive prompts on the device, there is now just one that opens the Island Details screen. The party leader will be able to initiate matchmaking, and party members will be able to ready up. Parents can also use the Island Details screen to unlock individual islands.

New Options for Weapon Spawning

Initial Weapon Ammo

An Initial Weapon Ammo option has been added to the following devices:

  • Capture Item Spawner
  • Class Designer
  • Elimination Manager
  • Item Granter
  • Item Spawner
  • Team Settings & Inventory
  • Vending Machine

New Tutorial: Verse Prop Hunt Template Tutorial

  • Managing players that join or leave the game.
  • Defining the number of hunters per total player count.
  • Keeping a running tally of props and ending the round when all props are destroyed.
  • Iterating information for all players in a game.
  • Increasing the hunter’s score with each elimination relative to the number of props remaining.
  • Reading via a script instead of configuring events and channels in devices.
  • Needing to use fewer devices.
  • Reviewing the @editable properties and tweaking the script's behavior without needing to understand Verse.

Fortnite Update V27.10 Patch Notes

Creative

New:

  • Added lock and unlock controls for IARC rating into the Creative Feedback widget.
  • Added interface which allows the Creative Feedback widget to stay open when cursor mode changes.
  • Added a cursor mode call when a party member needs to unlock an island code.

Fixes:

  • Fixed an infinite spinning wheel that occurred when a user opened Events and Functions tabs.
  • Fixed converted HUD Controller and Teleporter options.
  • Fixed an issue where stakes from the Wood Stake Shotgun wouldn't be instantly removed from objects on destruction.

Creative and UEFN

Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue where players on different teams spawned together when islands didn't have a Player Spawner device set at island start.
  • Fixed an issue where two Advanced Storm Controllers were shown in the Content Browser.
  • Fixed an issue where the On Team Is Out Of Respawns event in the Team Settings and Inventory device was not triggering when players out of lives spawned on a different team.
  • Fixed an issue where the Damage Volume device failed to damage guards.

Fortnite Patchwork

New:

  • Added a copyright disclaimer to the publish workflow and device details in UEFN.
  • Higher-end texture settings on a PC will now show higher quality audio cable visualizations on Patchwork devices.

Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue where two slightly different versions of the same audio would appear to be playing when cutting and pasting Patchwork devices.
  • Fixed the Speaker SFX ducking signal chain.
  • Updated the Instrument Player (I-PLAY) device patches.
  • Changed the Echo Effect (FX-ECHO) device Feedback maximum value to .99.
  • Fixed an issue where cables became stuck when players grabbed them.
  • Removed knob sounds and balanced the levels of carousel sounds.
  • Fixed an issue with the front panel of the Instrument Player (I-PLAY) that was causing the highlighted mesh to extend beyond the Open and Close buttons.
  • Fixed an issue that caused environmental Digital Signal Processing to be applied to Patchwork audio.
  • Fixed an issue where changing Note Style on the Note Sequencer might change note grid contents.
  • Fixed an issue on the Instrument Player and Drum Player where, after switching to a different instrument or drum kit, you would temporarily hear the wrong instrument or kit the next time you connected or disconnected a cable.
  • Fixed an issue where the green beat display on the Music Manager wasn't initializing in UEFN.

UEFN

Fixes:

  • Reduced the number of cases where spawning props causes the Push Changes button tooltip to show "Some changes may not be reflected in the Edit Session".
  • Fixed the color property during live edit of primitive shapes gallery and many other actors.
  • Fixed an issue where pressing Play again after a match during testing would receive a few changes from the editor.
  • Fixed the toggle for the Actor Hidden in Game property.

Verse

Fixes:

  • Truncates the names of tuples created during codegen so that they remain safely under FName limits. This is done by allowing the initial portion of the name to remain the same, but hashing any characters over the limit using SHA256 and appending that to the name.
  • Decreased the threshold for hashing overly long Verse tuple names since the asset registry also adds its own special prefix which causes such names to go over the FName limit and thus fail the cook.

Fortnite Game Mode and Development

Fortnite offers three distinct game modes, each sharing similar graphics, art assets, and mechanics. "Save the World" is a cooperative player-versus-environment mode where four players work together to achieve common objectives, battling zombie-like husks in a post-apocalyptic world. "Battle Royale" is a player-versus-player mode with up to 100 participants, competing to be the last player or team standing.

The map shrinks due to an encroaching storm, intensifying player encounters. "Creative" serves as a sandbox mode, granting players the freedom to create diverse games on their personal islands. Players can scavenge resources and build structures in all modes. While Battle Royale and Creative are free-to-play, "Save the World" is pay-to-play.

The game is monetized through V-Bucks, an in-game currency used for purchasing cosmetic items and battle passes. Fortnite's development began with an internal game jam in 2011, merging construction and shooter genres. The game's release was marked by a switch to a games-as-a-service model, with "Save the World" becoming a premium title in June 2020.

The Battle Royale mode was developed in response to the success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and quickly gained popularity, leading to separate development teams for each mode. The Creative mode, introduced in 2018, allows players to build and customize their islands.
