On April 24, 2023, Fumio Demura, a renowned Japanese Karate and Kobudo teacher, passed away at the age of 84. Demura was born in Yokohama, Japan on September 15, 1938. He was famously known as Pat Morita’s martial arts stunt double in the first, third, and fourth Karate Kid films.
Demura's martial arts journey began when he was just 12 years old, under the guidance of his instructor Asano. Later on, he started training in Kobudo, an Okinawan weapons training style, under the tutelage of Taira Shinken.

Fumio Demura (1938-2023) was a renowned Japanese master of karate and kobudo, which is the traditional art of Okinawan weaponry. He was well-known for his skills and served as Pat Morita's martial arts stunt double in the first, third, and fourth Karate Kid films, inspiring the character of "Mr. Miyagi."
Demura held the rank of 9th dan in Shito-Ryu karate and came to the United States in 1965 to represent the Japan Karate-do Itosu-kai. He was based in Southern California, where he gained a reputation for his expertise in karate and kobudo. In 1971, he was ranked 5th dan, which he maintained until at least 1982.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Demura wrote several books on martial arts, including Shito-Ryu Karate (1971), Advanced Nunchaku (1976, co-authored), Tonfa: Karate Weapon of Self-defense (1982), Nunchaku: Karate Weapon of self-defense (1986), Bo: Karate weapon of self-defense (1987), and Sai: Karate weapon of self-defense (1987).
Fumio Demura Early Life
Fumio Demura began his martial arts training at the age of 9 in Yokohama, Japan, under an instructor named Asano. At age 12, he switched to training under Ryusho Sakagami in Itosu-kai karate and received his 1st dan black belt in 1956.
He won the East Japan Championships in 1957 before beginning his training in Kobudo under Taira Shinken in 1959. During this time, he also personally met the Koga Ryu Ninjutsu Soke, Seiko Fujita, who was a 14th-generation Koga Ryu Ninja. In 1963, Demura was introduced to Donn Draeger, a martial arts scholar, who introduced him to Dan Ivan, the person who would eventually bring him to the United States as a karate instructor.
