Hi-Fi Rush

Hi-Fi Rush is a rhythm-based action game developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks in 2023. The game, initially launched for Windows and Xbox Series X/S on January 25, 2023, is now scheduled to release for PlayStation 5 on March 19, 2024.

The storyline revolves around Chai, a self-proclaimed "future rock star," who gains rhythmic fighting abilities after a music player is accidentally implanted in his chest during cybernetic surgery. Branded a "defect" by the corporation responsible, Chai teams up with new friends to take down the company's executives and thwart their plans. Notably, Hi-Fi Rush features licensed music from bands like The Black Keys and Nine Inch Nails.

Despite some criticism for its repetition, level design, and limited soundtrack, Hi-Fi Rush received generally positive reviews from critics who lauded its visual style, art direction, humor, characters, and combat mechanics.

Hi-Fi Rush Gameplay

Hi-Fi Rush is a rhythm-action game where the main character, Chai, and various elements in the environment move to the beat of the music. While attacking doesn't require following the rhythm, actions automatically synchronize with the music. Players can enhance damage output and perform combo finishers with well-timed button presses. There's a parry move to cancel enemy attacks by pressing the button at the exact moment of their strikes. Alongside beat-em-up action, the game includes rhythm-based mini-games, like call-and-response cues and button sequences matching on-screen prompts.

The game unfolds across linear stages, each representing a division of the antagonist corporation with a unique musical style. Chai engages in boss battles throughout these stages. In addition to combat, the game has platforming elements, and players can unlock new moves, abilities, and perks using gears, an in-game currency earned in combat. Permanent upgrades, like health and special meter enhancements, can be found as collectibles in stages.

Completing the game unlocks bonus features, including revisiting past levels, exploring previously inaccessible areas, a new difficulty setting, and Rhythm Tower—a survival mode akin to Bloody Palace from the Devil May Cry series.

Hi-Fi Rush Plot

Chai, a young man aspiring to be a rockstar, volunteers for Project Armstrong, a cybernetic limb replacement test program at Vandelay Technologies. The CEO, Kale Vandelay, secretly assigns Chai to garbage collection, leading to an accident where Chai's music player embeds into his chest.

Labeled a defect, Chai faces pursuit from robotic security. Discovering his new arm's capabilities, Chai, with the help of allies like Peppermint and 808, uncovers a conspiracy behind Project Armstrong involving mind control.

As they expose SPECTRA, an AI-program, the group battles Vandelay executives, including Kale, who plans to control users' purchasing habits. With Kale defeated and SPECTRA shut down, Roxanne Vandelay is reinstated as CEO, and Chai becomes the ambassador for Project Armstrong.

Post-story, mysterious doors are found, leading to a secret hub with another SPECTRA unit. Despite a backup plan, an accidental power plug pull deactivates SPECTRA, resolving the issue.
