Horizon Call Of The Mountain Wiki

Horizon Call of the Mountain is an action-adventure video game created by Guerrilla Games and Firesprite, serving as a spin-off to the Horizon series. The game was launched by Sony Interactive Entertainment in February 2023, specifically as a launch title for the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset.

In the game, players take on the first-person perspective and assume the role of Ryas, a proficient climber and archer. Armed with a hunter bow, players must use their skills to defeat a range of robotic creatures that they encounter throughout the game. Although the game primarily follows a linear format, players can opt to explore multiple paths and utilize different approaches to achieve their objectives.

As players progress through the game, they unlock additional tools and gears that enhance their abilities in both combat and exploration. Additionally, aside from the main story, the game features a scenic mode called "River Ride," where players can take a guided tour of the game's stunning landscapes.

Horizon Call of the Mountain was developed by two reputable studios: Guerrilla Games, responsible for the critically acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, and Firesprite, a UK-based studio recognized for their work on VR titles, such as The Playroom and The Persistence. The game was officially announced during Sony's CES 2022 press conference in January 2022, and it was released on February 22, 2023, as a launch title for the PlayStation VR2 headset.

Horizon Call Of The Mountain Review

Unfortunately, the core gameplay of Call of the Mountain fails to provide enjoyable gameplay, which detracts from the overall experience.

While the game does feature a cameo from the series' protagonist, Aloy, it primarily follows Ryas, a former Shadow Carja who embarks on a dangerous mission to receive a pardon for his crimes. The story focuses on a small cast of characters with complex familial and political histories, which makes for an intriguing narrative. However, the game's big bad is revealed too late to generate much excitement about confronting them.

Ryas relies on his archery and climbing skills to succeed in his mission. Climbing, unfortunately, comprises the majority of the gameplay and is not enjoyable. While tools unlocked throughout the game add some variety, basic climbing mechanics remain unenjoyable.

Combat, however, is thrilling, and players quickly become adept marksmen. Robot battles take place in specific arenas, and Ryas' ability to strafe and dodge adds to the fluidity of the gameplay. Knocking off specific armor elements rewards higher damage, but it's not a core mechanic. One-on-one battles against larger robots require strategic planning, such as setting off explosives at the right moment.

The game offers a lot of assistance with aiming, which makes shooting down flying robots or hitting distant targets more manageable. Ryas is also a tinkerer and must craft different ammo types and tools, which adds to the enjoyment of the gameplay. Call of the Mountain's story and combat are strengths, but the unenjoyable climbing mechanics detract from the overall experience.

Horizon Call Of The Mountain Story

According to a recent PlayStation Blog post, Horizon Call of the Mountain follows Ryas, a former Shadow Carja rebel who is seeking atonement for his past crimes. As stated by Guerrilla’s Studio Narrative Director, Ben McCaw, Ryas "ended up on the wrong side for the right reasons" and "his family was torn apart, and ultimately, he was incarcerated. This is the story of how he tries to come back from that."

Although franchise protagonist Aloy makes a cameo appearance, Ryas is the new protagonist, chosen for his skills as a "master climber, hunter, and explorer" who offers "the perfect viewpoint of the sweeping vistas and dangerous wilds of Horizon," as stated by McCaw. Call of the Mountain tasks Ryas with investigating a new threat to the Sundom, working for Sun-King Avad and his spymaster, Blameless Marad, in order to earn his freedom.
