Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an action-adventure game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. Serving as a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019), the game takes place five years after the events of the first installment and follows the ongoing journey of Cal Kestis, a young Jedi Knight, and his companions as they strive to survive under the oppressive rule of the Galactic Empire.

Survivor was released on April 28, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. Critics generally praised the game, commending its gameplay mechanics, writing, expansive open world, and the captivating performance of Cameron Monaghan as Cal Kestis. However, there were some criticisms regarding certain aspects of the story and technical issues that arose upon the game's initial release.

The announcement of a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was made in January 2022. Titled Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the game was officially revealed in May 2022 at Star Wars Celebration, accompanied by a CGI teaser trailer. Developed by Respawn Entertainment, the game was released on April 28, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.

Game director Stig Asmussen highlighted the utilization of real-time ray tracing and other advanced features enabled by next-generation technology, allowing Respawn to achieve a level of quality surpassing their previous developments. By exclusively targeting the ninth-generation consoles, Survivor benefits from significantly faster load times, as the development team is no longer constrained by the need to support the older PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles on which the first game was launched. This improvement is made possible by the solid-state drives (SSD) featured in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, which offer much faster asset loading compared to traditional hard drives.

How to Defeat the Mire Terror in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor?

This boss presents a formidable challenge for several reasons. Firstly, as a Mogu, it possesses powerful and relentless attacks. It can deal substantial damage and withstand numerous blows. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, it has a companion! Another Mogu joins the fray, adding significant complications to the fight.

To begin the battle, it is crucial to immediately focus your attention on this second Mogu. Taking down this one first is imperative, as failing to do so will greatly increase the difficulty of the fight. Distinguishing it from the boss is simple – it lacks horns. This particular Mogu fights in a similar manner to a standard one, meaning you can exploit its weaknesses just like any other Mogu. For instance, if it attempts to grab you, you can sever one of its arms. Take your time during this phase of the fight and maintain as much distance as possible.

After dealing with the first Mogu, it's time to shift your focus to the Mire Terror. Even without its companion, this boss is incredibly aggressive. Beware of its swift attacks and its grabbing maneuver. If it manages to grab you, there's no option to resist—you'll simply endure the full damage, and it's quite painful. Additionally, watch out for its ground pound attack. When you notice it preparing to slam into the ground, be sure to jump to avoid the impact. Another dangerous move to be mindful of is its mud toss attack. When you see it about to throw something at you, swiftly move aside to avoid getting hit.

Once you've navigated through these threats, the Mire Terror exhibits the same attacks as a regular Mogu, but with some additional follow-ups. There might be moments when it enters a frenzy, unleashing a powerful four-hit combo with a delayed third strike. Stay vigilant and maintain precise timing for parrying. Like other bosses, once you grasp the rhythm, concentrate on exercising caution and avoiding excessive aggression. By doing so, you will soon overcome the Mire Terror.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Gameplay

Combat:

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor builds upon the gameplay mechanics of its predecessor while introducing new elements. In terms of lightsaber combat, Cal Kestis now has access to five distinct stances, each offering unique characteristics. The single-blade and double-blade stances from Fallen Order are retained, and the special dual-wield blade attack has been expanded into its own dedicated stance. Originally intended as a playable stance in the previous game, time constraints limited its inclusion to a special attack.

Additionally, a new stance featuring a Kylo Ren-style crossguard lightsaber has been introduced. This stance requires players to carefully time their actions, particularly when blocking and parrying enemy attacks. Another new addition is the blaster stance, which enables Cal to wield both a lightsaber and a blaster for combined close and ranged attacks. These different stances are designed to be effective against specific types of enemies, requiring players to strategically choose their weapon of choice. Furthermore, a new Force stasis ability, reminiscent of Kylo Ren's power in The Force Awakens, allows players to freeze enemies and blaster bolts in mid-air.

Level Design:

The level design in Jedi: Survivor features larger and more expansive maps compared to Fallen Order, with an increased number of non-player characters. The central area of the planet Koboh is dense, surrounded by more open outskirts as players venture outwards. To provide easier access to various regions, the Mantis landing pads have been relocated to central locations on planets. Koboh serves as a "home away from home" for players, revisiting it throughout the game to unlock new pathways.

Design director Jeff Magers explains that exploration allows players to customize Cal while discovering optional areas containing skills, upgrades, and perks that enhance his power and prepare him for future challenges. In contrast, revisiting planets in Fallen Order primarily served the purpose of advancing the plot rather than encouraging exploration. Survivor introduces a fast travel system at meditation points, allowing players to quickly transport themselves to previously discovered meditation points on the same planet.

However, Respawn ensures that fast travel is not necessary for normal traversal or story progression, as they aimed to strike a balance between convenience and maintaining the integrity of the environment. The inclusion of fast travel addresses the highly requested feature that was absent in Fallen Order.

Jedi Meditation Chambers:

Scattered across Koboh are seven Jedi Chambers from the High Republic era, reminiscent of the Shrines in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. These Jedi Meditation Chambers offer puzzles and challenges for players to complete, granting rewards such as perks and skill points to upgrade Cal's abilities. These chambers become accessible once players rescue Zee from the Chamber of Duality.

Customization:

Player cosmetic customization options in Survivor have been significantly expanded compared to the limited choices in Fallen Order. In Survivor, players have the freedom to customize Cal's entire outfit, including his hairstyle and facial hair. Additionally, a white lightsaber blade has been introduced as a new color option for lightsaber customization.
