Unicorn Overlord

Unicorn Overlord is a cool new game made by Vanillaware and Atlus. It's all about strategy and fighting. You can play it on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S starting March 8, 2024. The story happens on a place called Fevrith, where there's a big war going on.

This guy named Alain, who used to be a prince but got kicked out of his kingdom, wants to take it back from the Zenoiran Empire. They're led by this bad guy called General Valmore. You get to control Alain and his buddies as they try to gather more friends and fight back against the empire. The battles are huge and happen in real-time, so you gotta be quick and smart.

The idea for Unicorn Overlord came from a person named Takafumi Noma back in 2014. He got the green light from George Kamitani, who's the big boss at Vanillaware, to be in charge of making the game. Takafumi did a bunch of stuff for the game, like directing, programming, and drawing. He wanted Unicorn Overlord to feel like those awesome strategy games from the 90s, but with a modern twist.

It took a long time, about ten years, to make the game because they were working on other projects too. But finally, it's almost ready for us to play! Oh, and the music in the game is made by a group called Basiscape, with Mitsuhiro Kaneda leading the way. So, get ready to lead Alain to victory and reclaim his kingdom in Unicorn Overlord!

Unicorn Overlord Gameplay

In Unicorn Overlord, players step into the shoes of exiled prince Alain, leading the Liberation Army on an epic journey through the magical world of Fevrith. The game is all about strategy and adventure, with players exploring towns, gathering allies, and engaging in intense battles.

As players explore the vast overworld, they'll guide Alain through towns where they can visit blacksmiths and merchants to gear up their army. Along the way, they'll encounter enemies represented by sprites, adding an element of danger to their journey.

When it comes to battles, Unicorn Overlord offers a mix of real-time action and tactical decision-making. Players control up to six characters, each with their own unique abilities and skills. The number of units players can deploy depends on a resource called Valor, which they earn by winning battles.

During combat, players will need to strategically position their units on the battlefield and make use of their skills to outsmart their opponents. Battles can take place in various settings, from open fields to bustling cities, each with its own challenges and obstacles.

One of the cool features of Unicorn Overlord is the ability to pause the game during combat to rethink strategies and check on units. This adds an extra layer of depth to the gameplay, allowing players to fine-tune their approach to each battle.

As players progress through the game, they'll unlock new character classes, abilities, and even an online multiplayer arena for extra challenges. With its charming 2D art style and engaging gameplay, Unicorn Overlord offers hours of fun for fans of tactical role-playing games. So gear up, gather your allies, and prepare for an epic adventure in Unicorn Overlord!

Unicorn Overlord Development

The making of Unicorn Overlord began back in 2014 when Takafumi Noma, a member of the Vanillaware team, came up with the concept. This was around ten years before the game hit the shelves. George Kamitani, the big boss at Vanillaware, approached Noma after they finished up Dragon's Crown in 2013. He asked Noma to create a new fantasy game, and Noma jumped at the chance.

With Kamitani's support, Noma took on the role of director, character designer, and lead programmer for Unicorn Overlord. Another person named Wataru Nakanishi helped out with the game's design, and Akiyasu Yamamoto from Atlus was the producer.

The development of Unicorn Overlord moved pretty slow because Vanillaware had their hands full with other projects at the same time. They were working on things like bringing older games to new consoles and also on a game called 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Noma even had to pitch in with the programming for 13 Sentinels.

Noma and Nakanishi worked together closely on figuring out how the game would play. They wanted Unicorn Overlord to feel different from Dragon's Crown, which was more like an arcade game. Instead, they aimed for something that felt like those classic tactical RPGs from the 90s, with fast-paced action and freedom for the players.

They wanted Unicorn Overlord to be a sort of "rebirth" for tactical RPGs, blending old-school charm with modern accessibility. Noma, who was mostly a programmer, took the lead on designing the characters too, giving them his own artistic touch. The game's art style was settled on pretty early, drawing inspiration from classic games while keeping things fresh. And the music, led by Mitsuhiro Kaneda and his team at Basiscape, was designed to match the game's vibe perfectly.
