Hunt: Showdown

Hunt: Showdown is a shooting game where you play as a bounty hunter. The goal is to hunt down and defeat scary creatures to collect rewards. But it's not just monsters you need to worry about—other players are trying to do the same, and you have to survive against them too.

The game was initially being made by a different team who wanted to make a game similar to Darksiders. It was supposed to be a game where people played together. But because of money problems, that team had to stop. Then, another group at Crytek in Germany took over and changed the game. They made it into Hunt: Showdown, which is more about competing with other players on a big map that looks like an open world.

When Hunt: Showdown came out, many people liked it because it had new and interesting ways of playing. But some players had trouble with the game on consoles—they said it didn't work very well or didn't get enough help and updates compared to the computer version.

Hunt: Showdown Gameplay

Hunt: Showdown is a game where you hunt scary creatures in two different ways. In "Bounty Hunt," you play as a bounty hunter aiming to find and defeat one of five big bosses for a reward. You can team up with two other players or go solo. The game's maps are like open worlds, filled with dangers and enemies. You gather clues to pinpoint the monster's hiding spot. There are different monsters to face, and you can use various weapons like shotguns and crossbows to fight them.

Ammo is limited, so you have to make every shot count. Players can also use traps and decoys. Once you defeat the monster, you grab the reward and try to survive until you reach an escape point. The exit spots change in each game. Getting a reward lets you see other players nearby, but it also reveals your location to everyone. You can steal someone else's reward, adding a strategic twist. Each game can have up to 12 players.

The second mode, "Soul Survivor" (used to be called Quickplay), is like a battle royale lasting 15 minutes. You start with basic gear and need to find and activate 4 Rifts on the map. Once you activate the fourth one, you become the Wellspring Carrier. Your goal is to defend yourself from others until the end or drain the Wellspring for enough time. The winner keeps their collected gear and abilities to use in the Bounty Hunt mode.

Hunt: Showdown Development

Vigil Games made the Darksiders games but got shut down in 2013 because the company they worked for went bankrupt. Crytek, a different game company, wanted to buy Vigil Games, but they didn't because their games didn't match Crytek's plans. Still, Crytek hired the boss of Vigil Games, David Adams, to lead their new studio in the United States, called Crytek USA. They hired many people who used to work at Vigil too.

Crytek USA wanted to make a new game called Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age. This game was going to let four players work together. It was set in the late 1800s and had old-fashioned weapons and classes. They wanted to make it feel like the era it was set in. Players could dress up their characters in different styles and use various skills.

But things changed. The game that was supposed to be about fighting monsters cooperatively became Hunt: Showdown. It still had the feel of the Darksiders games, mixing old-style stuff with new ideas. It had many different monsters and bosses. They used a special game-making tool to make sure each game felt different. This game was made using a special game engine called CryEngine.

Later on, Crytek had some money problems. They stopped working on Hunt: Showdown and had Crytek USA just help other companies use their game-making tools. Some people from Crytek USA, including David Adams, left because they weren't paid properly.

But in 2017, Crytek said they were still making Hunt: Showdown. They changed the name and planned to let people try it early on a platform called Steam. They let some players test the game before it was fully released. It came out for Xbox too in 2019.
