During the 2016 Republican presidential primaries, Conway initially supported Ted Cruz and served as the chair of a pro-Cruz political action committee. However, after Cruz withdrew from the race, Trump appointed Conway as a senior advisor and eventually campaign manager.
On December 22, 2016, Trump announced that Conway would join his administration as Counselor to the President. She played a key role in the administration's efforts to combat the opioid overdose epidemic, which was announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions on November 29, 2017.

Thomas Daniel "Tim" Conway (December 15, 1933 – May 14, 2019) was an accomplished American actor, comedian, writer, and director who had a prolific career in the entertainment industry. He made appearances in over 100 TV shows, TV series, and films from 1966 to 2012. One of his most notable roles was portraying the hapless Ensign Parker in the 1960s World War II TV sitcom McHale's Navy.
He also became a regular cast member on the TV comedy The Carol Burnett Show from 1975 to 1978, where he portrayed his iconic recurring characters Mister Tudball, the Oldest Man, and the Dumb Private.
In addition, he co-starred with Don Knotts in several films from 1975 to 1980, headlined his own TV series twice in 1970 and 1980-1981, played the lead role in the Dorf series of eight sports comedy direct-to-video films from 1987 to 1996, and voiced Barnacle Boy in the popular animated series SpongeBob SquarePants from 1999 to 2012.
He was also known for his ability to improvise humorous ad-libs and gestures during skits, which often caused his co-stars to break character while trying to control their laughter. He won six Primetime Emmy Awards throughout his career, four of which were awarded for his work on The Carol Burnett Show, including one for his writing.
