Kinky Boots

The 2005 British comedy-drama movie "Kinky Boots" was directed by Julian Jarrold and written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth. It was based on a real-life story and received a nomination at the 64th Golden Globe Awards. The film follows the story of Charlie, a young and conservative owner of a struggling shoe factory in Britain, who teams up with Lola, a drag queen, in an unexpected partnership to save the business. Charlie's plan involves making customized footwear for drag queens, which goes against the company's reputation for producing men's dress shoes, leading to disapproval from many people involved.

Is Kinky Boots a true story?

The Kinky Boots movie is inspired by the real-life story of Steve Pateman, who continued the legacy of his family at W.J Brooks, Earls Barton. As the demand for traditional men's brogues dwindled in 1993, Steve contemplated closing the factory. However, he received a request to make women's boots in men's sizes for cross-dressers, which enabled him to diversify and successfully sell glamour footwear in large sizes. The mock ponyskin and leather boots used as props in the 2004 film were made by Fantasy Shoes, London, and are displayed in the shoe gallery. Although they are a remarkable pair, they are not as sturdy as the pairs that Steve produced for wearing.

Kinky Boots Ending Explained

Nicola, Charlie's fiancée, is outraged when she discovers that Charlie has taken out a second mortgage on their house to save his struggling shoe factory. She demands that he sell the company, but Charlie refuses, determined to keep the business afloat and protect his employees' jobs. Their argument is broadcast on the factory's PA system, and it's heard by Don, a chauvinistic male worker and Lola's biggest opponent at the factory, as well as Lauren. Don undergoes a change of heart after Lola lets him win an arm-wrestling match, and he inspires the factory workers to make the boots in time for a fashion show in Milan. However, when Charlie catches Nicola cheating on him, he takes out his frustrations on Lola, causing her to quit. With nobody else to model the boots in Milan, Charlie reluctantly takes to the runway himself, but he stumbles and falls. In a surprise turn of events, Lola and her drag queen friends arrive and perform a spectacular show, saving the day. In the end, Lola becomes a star, headlining her own show and singing a song in tribute to the "kinky boots factory" of Northampton. Charlie and Lauren, who have become a couple, are among the happy attendees at the show.

Synopsis of Kinky Boots

Charlie Price is facing a difficult situation in Northampton, England. His family's shoe factory has been struggling since his father's death, and he is forced to lay off employees. During a business trip to London, Charlie meets Lola, a drag queen performer, and becomes fascinated by the fragility of drag queens' high heels. He sees an opportunity to create a high-heeled boot that can support a wider range of sizes and body types.

Back in Northampton, Charlie enlists Lauren, a worker at the factory, to help him design the boots. Lola initially rejects their designs but later agrees to consult with them. Charlie faces opposition from his employees, who are uncomfortable with the new direction, and from his fiancée, Nicola, who urges him to sell the factory building to a developer.

When Charlie is invited to showcase the boots in Milan, the strain on his employees causes most of them, including Lola, to walk out. Charlie's argument with Nicola is broadcast over the factory's PA system, and Lola's opponent, Don, has a change of heart and rallies the workers to make the boots in time for the Milan showcase. However, Charlie's frustration with Nicola leads him to lash out at Lola, causing her to quit.

In Milan, Charlie is left without a model for the boots and is forced to take the stage himself, resulting in an embarrassing fall. However, Lola and her drag queen posse arrive and save the day with a spectacular runway show.

The film concludes with Lola headlining her own show, singing a song in honor of the "kinky boots factory" of Northampton. Charlie and Lauren are in attendance and have become a couple.
