Orphan Plot
The movie tells the story of a couple, Kate and John, who adopt a 9-year-old girl named Esther after losing their third child. As they bring Esther into their home, strange things start to happen, and Kate begins to suspect that Esther is not who she appears to be. At the end of the movie, Kate discovers that Esther is actually a 33-year-old woman named Leena Klammer, who has a rare hormonal disorder that stunted her growth and made her appear much younger than her actual age. Leena was also a psychopath who had a history of posing as a child and infiltrating families to manipulate and eventually kill them. Leena had originally infiltrated Kate and John's home with the intention of killing them and their two children. However, Kate manages to uncover Leena's true identity and, in the final confrontation, Leena attacks Kate with a knife. John arrives just in time to save Kate and shoot Leena, killing her.The movie ends with Kate and John visiting their daughter's grave and placing a flower on it. As they walk away, a shadowy figure resembling Esther is seen watching them from a distance, suggesting that Leena had a network of accomplices who may continue her reign of terror.
What Happened At The End Of Orphan?
Kate's husband consistently downplays her concerns and fears in "Orphan," and their bond is not very strong. Along with John's affair and the loss of Jessica, Kate's struggle with alcoholism caused her to lose track of her daughter Max, who almost died in a frozen lake. Despite Max's survival and Kate's sobriety, the traumatic event continues to haunt her, as she strives to be a good mother and give love to a child in need, following the loss of Jessica.
In the film's final moments, Kate and Max confront Esther at the same frozen lake where Max had almost drowned. After a violent struggle, Kate ultimately defeats Esther by forcefully kicking her in the face, causing her neck to break and her body to sink into the icy waters. Kate realizes that Esther is not a child in need and thus unworthy of her maternal love.
Kate has always felt guilty about Max's near-death experience, and John has never missed a chance to hold it over her. But in the end, Kate is able to redeem herself by saving Max's life instead of putting it at risk.
