Red Skelton Bio

Richard Red Skelton, known as Red Skelton, was born on July 18, 1913, in Vincennes, Indiana, according to some sources. In a 1983 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Skelton revealed that his middle name was actually "Red" and that he had fabricated the middle name "Bernard" to satisfy a schoolteacher who doubted his middle name was "Red".

Skelton was the youngest child and fourth son of Joseph Elmer and Ida Mae Skelton. Sadly, his father, who had previously been a clown with the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, passed away two months before Richard's birth. Skelton's birth certificate carried his father's stepfather's surname. There were discrepancies about the year of his birth, with speculation that Skelton may have claimed to be older to secure employment at an early age.

Growing up in Vincennes, Skelton began working at the age of seven, selling newspapers and taking on odd jobs to support his family, who had lost their store and home. Skelton became skilled at the newsboy's patter and would continue his sales pitch until someone bought a newspaper to silence him.

Recognizing his ability to make people laugh, Skelton left school around the age of 13 or 14 and gained early performing experience in minstrel shows and on a showboat called The Cotton Blossom. He later joined the John Lawrence stock theater company but struggled with delivering serious lines, often eliciting laughter from the audience. Skelton also had brief stints on the burlesque circuit and with the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus.

Skelton's mother, Ida, supported his aspirations and allowed him to pursue a career in entertainment. He joined "Doc" R.E. Lewis's traveling medicine show as an errand boy, selling bottles of medicine to the audience.

Despite the challenges of the Great Depression, Skelton's early experiences in entertainment shaped his destiny and paved the way for his future success.
