In a recent interview with TV Line, actor Taye Diggs explained why he left the series. He revealed that talks about his exit from the series started in the middle of the fourth season. He said to TV Line, “I was having a great time. It was just a feeling that I got [that I was ready to leave], and I just honored that feeling. It was maybe mid-fourth season. I don’t even remember, to be honest, because the showrunner [Carroll] and myself are close. We’d been keeping in contact, so she had known, and we’d been talking. And we decided how to go about it, and storylines and whatnot, so it was all above board, and everyone was in the know.”

After Taye expressed the decision about his exit from the show to the showrunner, Nkechi Okoro Carroll, they started to plan how the character’s story should end in the series. His character, Billy Baker, was killed in the series. In his final episode, Billy and his team met with a bus accident. At first, he made it out of the bus safely. But he realized that Jabari was still inside the bus and he re-entered the bus to find Jabari. The bus was on the edge of the cliff. Whatever happened next was not shown in that episode. In the next scene, his son Jordan Baker announced that Billy died in that accident.
About the death of his character on the show, Taye explained to TV Line, The easiest choice would have been for me to teach at some college, but then given the intensity of the relationships between me and my family, and me and the team, it would not make sense if I was still alive and wasn’t still in contact with these children of mine — these students, these young men that had such an influence on my life. When I was told how I was exiting, I was impressed. No characters I’ve played have ever been dealt with in that fashion. I was honored."
