Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Review

From the moment I started playing Tears of the Kingdom, I was completely captivated. It's been two weeks since then, and I find it hard to tear myself away from the game even for a moment. As a 34-year-old woman, it's rare for a video game to have such a strong hold on me like it did when I was younger. But every few years, there's a game that reminds me of the magic that video games can offer, transporting you to another world and making time vanish. Tears of the Kingdom is one of those magical experiences that immerses you so deeply that it even changes the way you perceive the real world.

The game starts with you as a partially clothed elven protagonist trapped on an island in the sky. As you progress through countless hours of gameplay, you'll find yourself clothed in eccentric outfits discovered in hidden caves or purchased from artisans in distant villages. Your arsenal will consist of a delightful collection of weapons scavenged from ruins or crafted by fusing rocks and sticks together.

Along the way, you'll gather stories of your countless adventures. While Tears of the Kingdom provides a path to follow, I found it impossible to stay on track for long without getting sidetracked by the numerous shenanigans that await.

I'd set off from a stable with the intention of meeting a village chief, only to stumble upon a heated argument outside a cave. Curiosity would lead me to jump off my horse and explore the cave, emerging on the other side to spot an uncharted sky tower in the distance. With the aid of a flamethrowing shield I invented earlier, I'd battle monsters on my way to the tower.

Spontaneously constructing a makeshift go-kart from parts found near their camp, I'd ride halfway up a mountain toward the tower. Creating a fire to burn away thorny bushes blocking the entrance, I'd then climb the tower, catapult myself into the sky, and spot a glowing shrine on a floating islet. Gliding towards it, I'd become engrossed in solving the puzzle within. Three hours later, I'd find myself halfway up Death Mountain on the other side of the map, the village chief still waiting, and my abandoned horse still pawing the ground outside that cave.

The sense of freedom in Tears of the Kingdom is absolutely exhilarating. The kingdom of Hyrule is expansive and filled with diversions, and the ability to freely navigate between the skies and the ground below is a never-ending thrill. This game realizes the promise hinted at by Zelda: Skyward Sword many years ago.

Moreover, Tears of the Kingdom offers an unprecedented level of freedom in how you approach its myriad challenges. Hero Link's magical arm allows you to pick up, move, and combine nearly anything in the game world. Placing a dazzling seed on your shield blinds enemies that strike you, while fusing a monster eye with your arrow causes it to seek its target.

You can fashion rafts, wagons, hot-air balloons, or wonky ladders from various objects you come across. Abundant mechanical devices, from steering wheels to rockets to springs and fans, power your creations, enabling you to build planes, go-karts, catapults, and almost anything your imagination conjures.

Playing around with these self-made contraptions led me to countless unexpected moments of triumph and laughter. Each time I asked myself, "What happens if I do this?" the game responded with something entertaining. Once, trapped in a blizzard in the snowy highlands, I improvised a rocket-powered sled and held on for dear life as it careened down the hillside, completely out of control.

About Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Serving as the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild released in 2017, Tears of the Kingdom builds upon the foundation set by its predecessor. The game retains the open-world environment of Hyrule, but with expanded areas that allow for greater vertical exploration.

Players once again assume the role of Link, the iconic protagonist, who joins forces with Princess Zelda in a quest to defeat the malevolent Ganondorf, who seeks to bring ruin to the land of Hyrule.

The concept for Tears of the Kingdom emerged from the realization that the ideas for downloadable content (DLC) for Breath of the Wild had surpassed the scope initially intended. Nintendo's Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) division, led by director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma, spearheaded the development of the game.

The project was first teased at E3 2019, generating excitement among fans, and a more comprehensive reveal took place at E3 2021. Initially slated for release in 2022, the game experienced a delay and was eventually launched in May 2023.

Tears of the Kingdom has received widespread acclaim from players and critics alike. It has been praised for its numerous improvements and enhancements over its predecessor, particularly in terms of the expanded open-world design. The game encourages exploration and experimentation, allowing players to engage with the world of Hyrule in new and exciting ways. The addition of fresh features and mechanics has contributed to the positive reception, making Tears of the Kingdom a highly regarded entry in the long-standing Legend of Zelda franchise.

Is Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Co-op?

Tears of the Kingdom does not feature co-op gameplay. Like the majority of previous Legend of Zelda titles, this game is designed as a single-player experience without cooperative play. Players will embark on their adventure in Hyrule alone, immersing themselves in the vast world and engaging in the challenges and quests as solitary heroes.

The focus remains on the individual's journey, exploration, and puzzle-solving, allowing players to fully delve into the rich narrative and gameplay mechanics of the game on their own. Co-op functionality is not available in Tears of the Kingdom, staying true to the series' tradition of delivering captivating single-player experiences.
