Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - Gameplay
Combat:
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor builds upon the gameplay mechanics of its predecessor while introducing new elements. In terms of lightsaber combat, the protagonist, Cal Kestis, has access to five different stances, each with its own unique characteristics. These include the single-blade and double-blade stances carried over from the previous game, as well as an expanded dual-wield blade attack stance. Additionally, a new stance featuring a Kylo Ren-style crossguard lightsaber has been added, requiring precise timing for effective blocking and parrying.
Another new stance allows players to combine a lightsaber with a blaster for both close and ranged attacks. The various stances are designed to counter specific types of enemies, encouraging players to choose their weapons wisely. Furthermore, a new Force stasis ability enables players to freeze enemies and blaster bolts mid-air, reminiscent of Kylo Ren's powers in The Force Awakens.
Level design:
The level design in Jedi: Survivor offers larger and more expansive maps compared to its predecessor, Fallen Order. These maps are populated with a greater number of non-player characters. The development team aimed to create a dense central area in the planet Koboh, surrounded by more open outskirts areas for players to explore. The placement of the Mantis landing pads has been adjusted, making it easier for players to access different regions. Koboh serves as a "home away from home" for the player, with new pathways unlocking during each revisit. Exploring the worlds not only enhances customization options for Cal but also leads to optional areas containing valuable skills, upgrades, and perks that strengthen Cal's abilities. Fast travel is available at meditation points, allowing players to quickly move between previously discovered locations on the planet. However, the game encourages natural traversal and completion of the story without relying on fast travel.
Jedi Meditation Chambers:
Throughout Koboh, players can discover seven High Republic-era Jedi Chambers, reminiscent of the Shrines in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. These chambers present puzzles and challenges for players to overcome, offering rewards such as perks or skill points to upgrade their abilities. The chambers become accessible once the player rescues Zee from the Chamber of Duality.
Customization:
Survivor provides extensive player cosmetic customization options, surpassing the limited choices available in Fallen Order. Players can now customize Cal's entire outfit, along with his hairstyle and facial hair. Additionally, a new color option for lightsaber customization is introduced, allowing players to wield a white blade.
These enhancements in combat, level design, Jedi Meditation Chambers, and customization contribute to a more immersive and personalized gameplay experience in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
